Salary: Thurrock Band B Point 7-12

(£17,331.87 - £18,773.04 actual salary per annum)

28 hours and 45 minutes per week

8:40am - 3:10pm with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break and a 15 minute unpaid break

37 weeks of the year - term time only

Start Date: 6th January 2026

Fixed term until 31st August 2026

We are excited to offer a new opportunity for a SEN Learning Support Assistant to join our dedicated and successful team. This role involves supporting students within the classroom environment to enhance learning and improve educational outcomes.

About the Role:
We are seeking an individual with experience or a genuine interest in supporting children with special educational needs, such as autism. You will have a passion for helping pupils succeed and guiding them on their learning journey.

The successful candidate will:

  • Understand the subjects they support and apply rules fairly and consistently.
  • Demonstrate resilience and excellent de-escalation skills.
  • Build nurturing, supportive relationships with pupils.
  • Take a practical, hands-on approach to assisting teaching and learning.
  • Provide support during lunchtime as required.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • A good standard of English and Mathematics (GCSE or equivalent).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Relevant NVQ qualifications or equivalent (preferred).
  • Previous experience in a similar role (desirable).

The ideal candidate should:

  • Demonstrate experience or a strong interest in supporting pupils with diverse needs, such as Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, speech and language difficulties.
  • Possess a good standard of English and Mathematics (GCSE grades 4-9 or equivalent preferred).
  • Have prior experience working with children who exhibit challenging behaviour.
  • Understand and apply effective strategies to engage pupils with significant and specific needs.
  • Be flexible and adaptable in managing timetables and daily routines.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills.
  • Be confident in liaising with parents and relevant staff members.
  • Be willing and able to assist with personal care when required.
  • Demonstrate strong behaviour management skills.

This role will include:

  • Confidently managing physical demands, dysregulation and undertaking relevant training as required.
  • Supporting pupils to remain engaged in learning activities.
  • Promoting inclusion and acceptance of all students within the classroom environment.
  • Acting as a positive role model by setting high standards of conduct and encouraging positive behaviour to maintain a safe and inclusive learning space.
  • Providing feedback to the classroom teacher on pupil progress, lesson engagement, and maintaining accurate pupil-related records.
  • Responding to immediate issues or emergencies in line with school policies on health and safety, welfare, wellbeing, and safeguarding.
  • Offering additional support to teachers during lessons.
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with pupils in the classes being covered.
