What skills and experience we're looking for

Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Learning Support Assistants (LSAs)

Horndean Church of England Junior School is a thriving, inclusive school where every child is valued and supported to flourish. We take great pride in nurturing both academic achievement and personal growth, with a strong commitment to children with additional needs. Joining our dedicated Inclusion Team offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference every day. We are seeking enthusiastic and compassionate support staff to work with children with SEND across the school.

As our children’s needs are diverse, we are seeking staff with a broad range of skills to ensure the best possible match with individual pupils. Previous experience working in schools and/or supporting children with additional needs is essential. Our SEND LSA roles are offered on a fixed-term basis, aligned with the specific needs of individual children and expected to continue for the duration of their time at our school. As an employee of Hampshire County Council, you have protected employment rights.

We are looking for new staff to support children whose needs reflect one or more of the main SEN categories:

  • Cognition and learning

  • Communication and interaction

  • Social, emotional and mental health

  • Sensory and physical disabilities

Our SEND LSAs work with children who have Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Provision for these children is planned by their teacher, ably supported by our non-class-based Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion (SENCo), and delivered by our SEND LSAs. Our children require a mixture of in-class support and individual or small group intervention provision, so training and guidance will be provided to ensure new staff are confident and competent in role.

We have a large and successful team of SEND LSAs at our school who meet regularly with our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion to share good practice and undertake relevant training and development. In addition, new members of staff joining our team are allocated a ‘buddy’ from the class LSA team to support them personally.

What the school offers its staff

Our SEND LSAs work in close partnership with class teachers, parents, carers, outside agencies and our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion to promote learning for all children. Successful candidates will work flexibly and creatively with focused objectives to ensure children make good progress across the curriculum. They will have excellent communication skills and the ability to make work fun and engaging. An ability to encourage children to achieve their best and promote independence is essential.

We are keen to recruit several new SEND LSAs to support children in a variety of year groups and can offer full or part-time contracts as follows:
