SEND Teaching Assistant job summary

Widewell Primary Academy is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant to join our supportive and inclusive team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about making a real difference to the lives of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

You will work under the direction of the SENCO and HLTA, providing high-quality, bespoke support to pupils with SEND, particularly within targeted provision. The role is varied, rewarding, and central to our mission of ensuring every child thrives academically, socially, and emotionally.

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group supportto pupils with SEND across the school
  • Deliver structured academic, social, and emotional interventions
  • Support pupils’ emotional wellbeing and behaviour, promoting inclusion and positive relationships
  • Adapt learning activities to meet individual pupils’ needs
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCO, parents/carers, and external professionals
  • Monitor and record pupils’ progress and contribute to reviews and meetings
  • Support learning both in and outside the classroom, including off-site provision when required
  • Promote and embed the school’s ethos and values in all aspects of your work

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working in a primary school, ideally with pupils with SEND
  • Is a positive, caring team player with strong emotional intelligence
  • Can build effective relationships with pupils, staff, and families
  • Has excellent communication skills and a proactive approach
  • Is committed to inclusive practice and safeguarding
  • Holds (or is working towards) an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, with GCSE Maths and English (Grade C/4 or above)

Training or experience in SEND-specific interventions, trauma-informed practice, ELSA, Forest School, or outdoor learning would be an advantage.
