The successful candidates will:

  • Support children individually, in groups and across a class
  • Work with the class teachers in supporting teaching and learning
  • Inspire and engage children creatively in the learning process
  • Have a high level of communication skills and the ability to relate positively to children and adults.
  • Be committed to our school and maintaining effective relationships within our school community
  • Be committed to the happiness, wellbeing self-esteem and progress of everyone at the school
  • Be willing to participate fully in the life of the school
  • Preferably be a practising Catholic or willing to support the ethos and practices of our Catholic school

Desirable attributes:

  • Knowledge or understanding of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).
  • Experience or familiarity with Intensive Interaction.
  • Previous experience working with children with SEND in a school or similar setting.

Main Duties:

Ø To safeguard pupils

Ø To support the Catholic ethos of the school

Ø To attend to the pupils’ personal needs, and implement related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters

Ø To supervise and support pupils ensuring their safety and access to learning

Ø To establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs

Ø To promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils

Ø To encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher

Ø To encourage pupils to act independently as appropriate

Ø To prepare classroom as directed for lessons and clear afterwards and assist with the display of pupil’s work

Ø To be aware of pupil problems/progress/achievements and report to the teacher as agreed

Ø To undertake pupil record keeping as requested

Ø To support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate

Ø To gather/report information from/to parents/carers as directed

Ø To provide clerical/administrative support – photocopying, typing, filing, collecting money etc.

Ø To support pupils to understand instructions

Ø To support pupils in respect of local and national learning strategies – literacy, numeracy, early years, as directed by the teacher

Ø To support pupils in using basic ICT as directed

Ø To prepare and maintain equipment/resources as directed by the teacher and assist pupils in their use

Ø To be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, SEND, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person

Ø To be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils, including those with SEND across the four broad areas of need (Communication & Interaction, Cognition & Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental Health, Sensory & Physical), have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop

Ø To contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school

Ø To appreciate and support the role of other professionals, including the SENCO and external agencies

Ø To attend relevant meetings as required

Ø To participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required, including SEND training

Ø To assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtimes if applicable

Ø To accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required

Ø To support pupils over lunchtimes and breaks as required.
