The Board of Trustees of Wembley Multi-Academy Trust (WMAT) is looking to appoint a strategic, influential and collaborative individual to the significant role of SENDCo at North Brent School. Our motto at all WMAT schools is ‘Achievement for All’ and we are looking for a dynamic individual who can lead the SEND department to ensure that all students excel in their education. North Brent School opened on its new site in September 2024, so this is a unique opportunity to establish a culture of academic rigor, care and support in a fantastic setting. We are seeking to appoint a SEND specialist with a track record of leadership in this area and who shares our moral purpose.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build upon their current expertise and develop their leadership in a range of areas. They will be committed to enhancing all aspects of students’ lives and making a real difference to students’ life chances. They will provide strong leadership to the SEND department at the school to ensure that the school is a fully inclusive environment where no child is disadvantaged because of a special educational need, disability or medical condition.
They will have a proven track record of improving SEND provision. They will be highly analytical, emotionally astute and able to deploy appropriate strategies to maximise impact. The successful candidate will be able to think and act strategically, be cognisant of the broader picture, whilst fully understanding the implications of finer details. They will have experience of helping develop others, be committed to our values of excellence and achievement, and believe in the unique way in which our Trust works.
Specific Responsibilities
- To lead, manage, develop and maintain high quality SEND provision which enables high quality teaching, excellent learning outcomes and success for all children, including those on the K register and with EHCPs
- To line manage, train and develop professionals who directly support children with Special Educational Needs, including the SEND Teaching Assistants, ensuring value for money.
- To liaise with professionals from outside agencies to secure the best care and outcomes for students
- To be responsible for all aspects of education for students with SEND
- To ensure that SEND is represented in whole school policies and procedures
- To provide specialist support to SEND pupils and their families
- To monitor that the school follows DfE regulations, particularly in regards to access arrangements for examinations
- To monitor an evaluate the impact of support and intervention for individual pupils
- Deliver specialist training to parents, teachers and professionals from other agencies to promote inclusive practice
- Network with parents, the Local Authority, primary schools and other services/agencies to ensure that information is effectively and appropriately shared
- Contribute advice and support in the process of early identification, assessment and provision in line with the SEND Code of Practice
- Monitor teaching and learning through observation, talking to children and obtaining data. Then by providing effective feedback, support and advice, raise the standards and expectations of all pupils.
- Research, develop and share best practice with respect to inclusion and raising attainment within specialist area
- Advise on access to specialist equipment and resources and be responsible for ensuring that this is used correctly
- Engage in own professional development, updating knowledge and skills relating to educational issues and to contribute to the professional development of other, ensuring that this meets the needs of students with SEND requirements
Qualifications & Experience
We are looking for a leader with a successful track record of school improvement. You will have:
- Qualified Teacher Status, Degree, further relevant professional studies.
- A willingness to undertake the NPQSL, NPQH or relevant/equivalent training.
- Values that align with WMAT.
- SENDCo qualification
- An understanding of what it takes to work with others and help lead one of the highest achieving schools in the country.
- A track record of securing tangible success and outstanding outcomes for SEND learners.
- The technical ability and behavioural traits that secure the confidence of all stakeholders.
- Experience of developing a culture of learning and continuous improvement of staff and students.
- Strong monitoring and evaluation skills.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of current developments and the latest educational research (such as curriculum development and how pupils learn).
- An ability to set up systems and processes to ensure departmental improvement.
- An ability to understand people’s individual strengths, harness and develop them.
- A commitment to learning and leading with humility.
