What skills and experience we're looking for

Attleborough Academy is a member of the Sapientia Education Trust (SET). SET is an expanding multi-academy trust with 10 primary and 7 secondary schools.

We are looking for a hard-working and enthusiastic person with high standards and the ability to communicate and interact effectively with others as part of our school as a Sixth Form Academic Mentor. The role is designed to support students as they are recruited and transition into Level 3 studies, progress through their courses, and complete their final assessments.

The professional competencies expected of a Sixth Form Academic Mentor are:

  • The effective use of ICT to support learning and administration
  • Working knowledge of the National Curriculum and Level 3 academic and vocational qualifications
  • Understanding of the principles of child development and learning processes
  • Ability to self-evaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults
  • Ability to work constructively as part of a team, understand classroom roles and responsibilities and the Academic Mentor’s position within these
  • The ability to communicate clearly and tactfully using appropriate methods and an awareness of the impact of that communication on others
  • Able to maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders and able to work as an effective and flexible part of a team; willing to change methods of work and routines to benefit the team
  • Be able to multi-task and work under pressure
  • Be flexible and resilient in managing and executing daily responsibilities
  • Able to demonstrate strong planning and organisational skills
  • Independent motivation and the ability to motivate others
  • Willingness to accept responsibility
  • The ability to prioritise effectively, meet deadlines and accept challenges
  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours and days when necessary

The qualifications and experience required of a Sixth Form Academic Mentor are:

Essential - English/Literacy and Maths/Numeracy qualifications at Level 2 – grade 5/B or equivalent

Degree qualified

Experience of working with children of the relevant age in a university, school, college, care, health service, social care or other youth environment

Desirable - Other relevant qualifications eg Careers Advice

NVQ in Support Teaching and Learning

Training in Literacy/Numeracy strategies and/or in a particular curriculum or learning area e.g. bilingual, sign language, dyslexia, ICT, Maths or English, or Level 3 subjects taught in the Academy

General Responsibilities

The Sixth Form Academic Mentor is responsible for providing timely, well-informed, accurate, academic and careers support to students in the Sixth Form. They will work closely with the Head of Sixth Form, Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Sixth Form tutors, and Sixth Form Pastoral Mentor to deliver a comprehensive package of Careers, PSHCE, Academic, and Pastoral support.

Specific Responsibilities

A non-exhaustive list of specific responsibilities for the role is below and you will be required to undertake other duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be required.

  • To work with students to develop their approaches to challenging academic work while supervising private study sessions and in small groups or 1:1 mentoring.
  • Tracking and monitoring the completion of tasks by students during supervised study sessions and feeding back to teaching staff on the completion of those tasks.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of systems for tracking, monitoring, and intervening with student performance.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to support the academic and wider development of students.
  • Develop effective resourcing of the supervised study centre for students to be able to access effective and relevant study tools in a timely manner.
  • Support Sixth Form leaders to develop and deliver comprehensive careers education, information, advice and guidance.
  • Oversee and support students in completing the Extended Project Qualification.
  • Support Sixth Form leaders in recruiting students to the Sixth Form and designing effective programmes of study at Level 3.
  • Oversee the administration of Work Experience for Y12 students and the Attleborough Sixth Form Volunteering Programme
  • Provide administration support for Sixth Form events, including (but not limited to) university visits, revision seminars, visiting careers speakers, parents’ information events, and mock and formal exam series.

Normal working Pattern

Monday: 08:00 – 16:00

Tuesday: 08:00 – 16:00

Wednesday: 09:00 – 17:00

Thursday: 09:00 – 17:00

Friday: 08:25 – 15:55

Unpaid Breaks 30 minutes lunch break where the working day exceeds 6 hours

Holidays - Holiday pay entitlement is included in the pro rata salary for the post and there is no entitlement to take holidays during term-time.


What the school offers its staff

REMUNERATION

  • Points 12 to 17 of the Support Staff Salary Scale
  • FTE Salary: £26,421 to £28,770 per annum
  • Pro rata salary: £23,207 to £25,270 per annum

The post-holder will be auto enrolled to join the Trust’s nominated pension scheme for support staff provided by Norfolk Pension Fund. This scheme is a defined benefit scheme with the current employer contribution rate set at 22.90%, and employee contributions of 6.5%. Staff do have the option to reduce contributions by 50%.
