Sixth Form Mentor, Study Centre and Welfare Mentor job summary
Rugby Free Secondary School
Job Purpose
To provide pastoral assistance to Sixth Form students and to support them in their studies. To be responsible for maintaining a positive environment for learning in our Sixth Form Study Centre, supervising students to ensure that they make the best use of their non-contact time and challenging those not meeting expectations. To develop student study skills and monitor enrichment activities to support students’ academic performance. To mentor students who require additional support in order to enable them to maximise their progress in their studies.
Specific Responsibilities
- Maintain a positive environment for learning in the Sixth Form Study Centre
- Ensure all students are correctly registered and remain in the Study Centre.
- Mentor students who require additional pastoral support.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with the students, establishing a positive, professional presence within the Sixth Form and responding appropriately to individual needs
- Monitor, intervene, praise and sanction student conduct within the Sixth Form Study areas
- Liaise with subject leaders to maximise learning opportunities within the study centre
- Support the implementation of all School/Sixth Form policies e.g. behaviour, attendance, uniform, lanyards, appropriate use of mobile phones etc.
- Embed the Trust’s values in the day to day experience and conduct of the students, both inside and outside the Study Centre.
- Offer advice and guidance as required helping students to map out and/or plan their work and meet deadlines.
- Maintain a positive environment and atmosphere for learning at all times. Minimise noise, litter and mess. Actively circulate and challenge those not meeting expectations.
- Direct students towards relevant resources/materials to help them become more effective learners both generically and subject specifically
- Plan and lead after school study support sessions for identified students
- Make appropriate use of classroom resources ensuring that resources are returned to an appropriate place in an appropriate condition after use
- To support the Sixth Form leadership team in the daily running of the Sixth Form
- Support the Sixth Form team to maintain accurate records of student attendance, monitoring absences to lessons and tutor times through established school systems – including placing students on report, and responding to attendance issues according to Sixth Form policies and procedures
Safeguarding
- To ensure that all students have a safe environment in which they can learn, reporting any concern about the environment to a member of the site team or if appropriate to one of the Designated Safeguarding Leaders
- To be aware of systems which support safeguarding and following the procedures as highlighted in the Safeguarding Policy
- To identify students who may benefit from early help as soon as possible and discuss this with one of the Designated Safeguarding Leaders
- To consider at all times what is in the best interests of the child
- To protect students from maltreatment; preventing impairment of student’s health or development; ensuring that students grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
- To take action to enable all students to have the best outcomes
