Student and Family Support Worker job summary

JOB DESCRIPTION Purpose of Role

To build strong, supportive relationships with disadvantaged students and their families—particularly those who are harder to reach—in order to remove barriers to success and promote engagement with education. The postholder will play a key role in supporting the school’s work with pupils eligible for Pupil Premium and Pupil Premium Plus (including looked after, previously looked after children and those in kinship care arrangements), attending PEP meetings and coordinating targeted support.

Key Responsibilities 1. Supporting Students

Build trusted relationships with students, providing mentoring, support and advocacy where needed.

Support students’ learning, attendance, behaviour and emotional wellbeing.

Develop and deliver 1:1 or small group interventions to promote engagement and remove barriers to learning.

Contribute to the creation and implementation of Pastoral Support Plans, SEND Support Plans and reintegration programmes.

Support the Deputy Headteacher and Designated Teacher in the PEP process for Looked After Children.

Support the Deputy Headteacher and Designated Teacher in the Education Plan process for Previously Looked After Children and those living in Kinship Care arrangements

Provide pastoral support for students during times of crisis or transition.

2. Supporting Families

Develop constructive and trusting relationships with families, including those who may be harder to engage.

Meet with parents/carers at school, in the community or in the home to discuss concerns and plan support.

Support families in navigating school systems (e.g., Class Charts, ParentPay, Parents’ Evening booking).
Liaise with the local authority and support families with applications for Free School Meals or other entitlements.

Act as a key contact for families of children in receipt of Pupil Premium Plus, attending relevant meetings and ensuring they receive their entitlement to support.

3. Working with Staff and External Agencies

Work closely with the Pupil Premium Achievement Lead to coordinate and monitor interventions for disadvantaged students.

Liaise with teaching staff, pastoral teams, the Behaviour Manager and SEND colleagues to ensure a joined-up approach to support.

Attend pastoral and inclusion meetings and contribute to team discussions around vulnerable students.

Work collaboratively with external agencies (e.g., Virtual School, social care, early help services) to support families and improve outcomes.

Support the identification of students who may benefit from additional help and contribute to decisions about the use of Pupil Premium funding.

Professional Responsibilities

Maintain accurate, confidential records of student progress and family contact.

Contribute to student reviews, reports, and evaluations of intervention impact.

Keep up to date with policy and best practice relating to disadvantage, safeguarding, education, health and social care.

Participate in regular line management, team meetings, supervision, training, and professional development.

Promote equality, inclusion and anti-discriminatory practice in all aspects of the role.

Comply with school policies including safeguarding, data protection, and health and safety.

General

Promote the ethos of the school and act as an ambassador for its work with disadvantaged students.

Undertake any other duties that fall within the remit of the role, as reasonably requested by the Headteacher.
