Student Support Officer job summary
We are seeking a compassionate, proactive, and skilled Student Support Officer to join our team in providing essential non-teaching support for students. The primary focus of this role is to support the leadership learning team by facilitating the smooth operation of the school timetable, managing student behaviour with de-escalation techniques, and delivering targeted small group interventions aimed at promoting a calm, focused, and productive learning environment. This role will contribute to the overall development of students, helping to ensure that all learners thrive both academically and emotionally.
Key Responsibilities:
Timetable Management:
Assist in the coordination and fulfilment of the school timetable for leadership learning support, ensuring appropriate coverage and resource allocation.
Work closely with teachers and other school staff to manage changes or adjustments to the timetable, ensuring continuity of support for students.
Student De-escalation and Support:
Use a range of de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour and promote positive student engagement.
Provide calm, consistent support to students during times of emotional distress or behavioural challenges, ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment.
Build strong relationships with students to foster trust and create a supportive atmosphere for learning.
Small Group Interventions:
Deliver targeted small group interventions for students, focusing on areas such as emotional regulation, social skills, and academic support.
Work collaboratively with teaching staff and the Special Educational Needs (SEN) team to identify students who would benefit from intervention programs.
Track and monitor the progress of students in interventions, adjusting strategies as necessary to meet individual needs.
Collaborative Working:
Collaborate with the school's pastoral care, SEN, and leadership teams to develop and implement tailored support strategies.
Support the delivery of whole-school initiatives aimed at improving student well-being and engagement.
Attend meetings and contribute to the development of strategies for individual students or groups.
Data and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of student behaviour, progress in interventions, and any relevant communication with parents and staff.
Contribute to reporting and evaluation of student support programs, identifying areas for improvement.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
Essential:
Strong understanding of de-escalation techniques and experience applying them in a school setting.
Experience working with young people, particularly in a support or pastoral role.
Ability to build rapport with students and staff, with excellent interpersonal skills.
Understanding of child development and the social, emotional, and educational needs of students.
Ability to work effectively in a team and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Desirable:
Previous experience in a similar role, particularly in an educational setting.
Knowledge of behaviour management strategies and support frameworks.
Experience in delivering small group interventions or working within a Special Educational Needs (SEN) context.
First Aid training or other relevant certifications.
Personal Attributes:
Compassionate and empathetic, with a genuine desire to support students’ well-being and development.
Calm under pressure, with the ability to manage challenging situations with patience and professionalism.
Flexible and adaptable, able to respond to the diverse needs of students.
