Subject Lead - Drama / English Teacher job summary

This is an exciting time to join our school as we plan to transition from being a well-established Middle School into a community-focussed, values-led Church of England Secondary School. As a school, we are caring, loving and supportive with high aspirations for all. We promote inclusion, we are proud to belong and we value each individual. Our vision is to ‘Live life in all its fullness’. For both students and staff, we choose to live our values, being the best we can be in community.

We are a popular and oversubscribed school of 720 students. We are situated in Cranfield – a village in the Local Authority of Central Bedfordshire. We have links with Cranfield University – a Science and Aerospace University with many world-class, large-scale and national facilities. We also work closely with the University of Bedfordshire which has a strong tradition of teacher-training.

Students are largely drawn from the village of Cranfield and our neighbouring parishes of Wootton and Marston Moretaine. There is an increasing number of ‘out-of-catchment’ students who are applying to the school because of its good reputation.

Our transition to evolve into an 11-16 secondary school is planned to begin in September 2026 so this post will be ideal for secondary practitioners; this also provides a great opportunity to develop a KS4 curriculum. We will still have KS2 students for the next few years so anyone with KS2 experience would be most welcome to apply.

We already have a secondary approach to our curriculum delivery with specialist teachers providing engaging, challenging and inspiring lessons across all four year groups. Currently, only Year 7 have specific Drama lessons and there is an Option in Year 8 to study Drama. We are looking to offer Drama as an option in KS4 and we have been working towards offering Performing Arts (BTEC Pearson Edexcel: 603/7054/3). This is a great opportunity to further develop our Drama curriculum and we are looking for a creative teacher to develop our Drama provision.

We have a great commitment to extra-curricular Drama and we are looking for a colleague who is willing and able to inspire great performances from our very talented and enthusiastic students.

The post will initially also involve English teaching. English is a well-led and superbly, resourced department.

This is a perfect opportunity for any of the following colleagues:

an experienced Subject Leader looking for the challenge of creating a new Drama learning pathway through to KS4.

a teacher looking to take on the role of Subject Leader.

an ECT looking to start their career in a supportive school environment with the opportunity for rapid development and growth.

Drama is an area which will benefit from our transition to a secondary school with plans to develop a studio space and a multi-purpose Assembly/Performance space. Full details of the current Drama and English schemes of work can be accessed on the school website – Learning -> Subjects -> Drama / English. There is a significant teaching commitment attached to this post and the postholder will also look after a tutor group.

Commitment to safeguarding

We are committed to the safeguarding and promotion of children’s welfare. We also have a sincere commitment to equal opportunity and to the celebration of diversity, including in our staff recruitment. We welcome applications from all sections of our community very warmly, and we recognise the huge strength and opportunity that comes from diversity in all aspects of our make-up. We will need to obtain references in advance of interview for any candidate short- listed, and all job offers are subject to satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance.

Holywell School is a caring, distinctively Christian, community-focussed Church of England School. We aim to continue the historic tradition of Church of England Schools by providing a Christian Values-inspired education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. As a school, we are a loving, supportive community with high aspirations for all. We promote inclusion, we are proud to belong and we value each individual. We look after each other, believe in second chances and aim to be the best we can be so we can serve and support the common good.

Our vision is to ‘Live life in all its fullness’. We aim to be an outstanding Christian learning community where everyone is valued as a unique individual and where everyone feels safe. We will aim to be the best we can possibly be, to treat others as we wish to be treated and to make a positive difference to our community and beyond. We strive to be peaceful problem-solvers with open minds and hearts, living God’s love and being kind.

We are a popular and oversubscribed school of 700 students. 2021-2022 will see our final year of expansion. Although situated in the Local Authority of Central Bedfordshire, we straddle the border and have half of our population from Bedford Borough schools. Students are largely drawn from the two villages of Cranfield and Wootton. There is an increasing number of ‘out-of-catchment’ students who are applying to the school because of its good reputation. As part of Central Bedfordshire’s ‘Schools for the Future’ development programme, we are currently exploring a long-term plan to evolve into an 11-16 secondary school.
