To start 1st September 2026
This is a wonderful opportunity for an ambitious and creative colleague to develop our curriculum further through Years 9 to 11 and we are looking for a talented member of staff to lead our students to being successful at GCSE Level. This would be a perfect opportunity for an experienced Subject Leader or for a teacher looking to take on the role of Subject Leader. We currently have four full-time members of the English team and other team members also teach in the department (including myself as Headteacher).
This is our last year as a Middle School and our transition to evolve into an 11-16 secondary school starts in September 2026 so this post will be ideal for secondary practitioners. We have already done lots of planning ahead and we are going to use AQA as our English GCSE courses for Language and Literature. We will still have Year 6 students next academic year and we will have one more year of KS2 SATs so any KS2 and SATs experience would be beneficial. Please see the attached letter of introduction, job description and person specification for more details about the role.
The start date for the position is September 2026. If you need any additional information or clarification about the post, or should you wish/be able to visit the school ahead of submitting your applications, please contact either Ms Romana Tomei (Business & Operations Manager) by email (rtomei@holywellschool.co.uk) or myself: (mgsimpson@holywellschool.co.uk). Completed applications should be received on or before noon on Monday 4th May 2026 via MYNEWTERM only. Please explain in your letter of application why you are passionate about teaching English, what your pedagogical approach for English is and how you could support us in developing our KS4 curriculum. Interviews will take place week commencing 11th May 2026
Holywell School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff and to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to all necessary pre-employment checks, including: an enhanced DBS; medical fitness; identity and right to work. All applicants will be required to provide two suitable references.

Holywell School is a caring, distinctively Christian, community-focussed Church of England School. We aim to continue the historic tradition of Church of England Schools by providing a Christian Values-inspired education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. As a school, we are a loving, supportive community with high aspirations for all. We promote inclusion, we are proud to belong and we value each individual. We look after each other, believe in second chances and aim to be the best we can be so we can serve and support the common good.
Our vision is to ‘Live life in all its fullness’. We aim to be an outstanding Christian learning community where everyone is valued as a unique individual and where everyone feels safe. We will aim to be the best we can possibly be, to treat others as we wish to be treated and to make a positive difference to our community and beyond. We strive to be peaceful problem-solvers with open minds and hearts, living God’s love and being kind.
We are a popular and oversubscribed school of 700 students. 2021-2022 will see our final year of expansion. Although situated in the Local Authority of Central Bedfordshire, we straddle the border and have half of our population from Bedford Borough schools. Students are largely drawn from the two villages of Cranfield and Wootton. There is an increasing number of ‘out-of-catchment’ students who are applying to the school because of its good reputation. As part of Central Bedfordshire’s ‘Schools for the Future’ development programme, we are currently exploring a long-term plan to evolve into an 11-16 secondary school.
