Roles and Responsibilities for a Subject Leader
In addition to the responsibility of class teacher, as set out in this job description and the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document, the Subject Leader will also undertake the duties and responsibilities as set out in this job description.
Core Purpose:To provide outstanding leadership of Physical Education so that the PE department is highly effective, with strong student participation, excellent teaching and learning, and a culture where all students experience the joy, success, and personal growth that sport can bring.
The Curriculum Leader will ensure the curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, that staff are well-supported and developed, and that students’ progress, engagement, and well-being are secured through a coherent, well-resourced programme of study and extra-curricular sports opportunities.
Core Aspects of the Role:
Provide a clear and ambitious vision for PE that secures high standards of teaching, learning, participation, and achievement across all key stages.
Design and implement a coherently planned, well-sequenced curriculum that builds students' knowledge, skills, confidence, and cultural capital, particularly for disadvantaged and SEND students.
Ensure that curriculum planning and delivery are underpinned by current research and best practice in PE and pedagogy.
Lead the development and implementation of effective assessment strategies to monitor and support student progress.
Lead and develop the participation of extra-curricular opportunities, including participation in local and national competitions and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Teaching and Learning
Model consistently high-quality teaching and learning, demonstrating excellent subject knowledge, disciplinary literacy, and pedagogical content knowledge.
Support and develop the practice of both specialist and non-specialist teachers to ensure all students receive an excellent experience in PE.
Use data effectively to identify underperformance, adapt teaching approaches, and implement targeted interventions.
Champion behaviour for learning by establishing and supporting clear, consistent routines across the department.
Build a collaborative, supportive team culture that promotes professional dialogue, innovation, and shared responsibility for outcomes.
Lead departmental meetings effectively, contributing to the wider faculty and whole-school initiatives.
Act as a performance development reviewer, providing coaching and feedback that supports the growth of staff.
Support the induction, mentoring, and development of new or trainee teachers within the department.
Manage the subject budget efficiently, ensuring that resources are well-maintained, fit for purpose, and support high-quality learning experiences.
Ensure that facilities and equipment are used safely and effectively to promote a wide range of sporting activities.
Contribute to the development of extracurricular and enrichment activities, including ensuring strong participation in school teams and fixtures.
Support the school’s Catholic ethos by promoting values of dignity, solidarity, and the pursuit of excellence through sport.
Ensure the PE curriculum and enrichment programme contribute effectively to the school’s wider work on character education, student leadership, and careers education (CEIAG).
Promote high levels of participation, inclusion, and enjoyment, celebrating the achievements of individuals and teams across the school community.
Support the school’s commitment to equality, diversity, and safeguarding within all PE activities.
Continuing Professional Development
Take responsibility for the leadership of professional development, in consultation with the line manager, identifying and addressing areas for improvement or further expertise for the subject and the team.
Actively engage in professional development opportunities linked to the School Improvement Plan, making full use of available training and resources.
Reflect on professional practice and seek opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills to ensure the highest standards of leadership and teaching.

Qualified Teacher status and experience teaching the subject
