Subject Leader - Science job summary
Due to the retirement of our longstanding Subject Leader for Science, we are seeking to appoint a passionate, inspirational and ambitious teacher to lead our successful Science Department at Plantsbrook School from September 2026.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a forward-thinking and highly collaborative department that is committed to delivering exceptional science education. At Plantsbrook, science is more than learning facts - it is about exploring, questioning and understanding the world through engaging, practical and thought-provoking learning experiences.
Our Science Department is a high-tech launchpad for the next generation of scientists and innovators. The team consists of a Subject Leader, three Assistant Subject Leads and experienced technicians who work together to create a supportive and ambitious culture. Staff range from Early Career Teachers to highly experienced colleagues, creating a collaborative environment where expertise, ideas and effective practice are shared openly.
The department benefits from eleven well-equipped laboratories, a strong team of technicians and excellent outcomes at GCSE (Combined and Separate Science) and A Level. Our A Level courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, alongside OCR National Applied Science, are popular choices and contribute to a thriving post-16 science community.
Our Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 curricula have recently been revitalised and continue to evolve, incorporating strategies such as WalkThrus, retrieval practice and meaningful links to careers in science. In addition, our 1:1 Chromebook scheme enhances teaching and learning, supporting independent study and enabling students to develop as confident and inquisitive learners.
As Subject Leader, you will provide professional leadership and strategic direction for the department, driving high standards of teaching and learning and ensuring all students achieve their full potential. You will lead and develop colleagues, monitor student progress, manage departmental resources and contribute to the wider leadership of the school.
We are looking for someone who:
- Is an excellent classroom practitioner with a passion for science education
- Has the vision and leadership skills to inspire and develop a strong team
- Is committed to high expectations and high achievement for all students
- Has the ability to drive improvement in teaching, learning and outcomes
- Is enthusiastic about working collaboratively and contributing to the wider life of the school
Plantsbrook School is committed to supporting staff development and wellbeing. This role offers an outstanding opportunity for an experienced teacher ready to take the next step in leadership or an existing leader looking to further develop their impact.
If you are passionate about science and excited by the opportunity to lead a dynamic department and inspire the next generation of scientists, we would be delighted to hear from you.
