Full time maternity cover from April 20th 2020 (this includes a two week handover period)
MPS/UPS plus SEN 1 or 2 depending on qualification

If you are…
• A subject specialist qualified English teacher either experienced in deaf education or new to deaf education and ready for a new challenge
• An excellent communicator
• Keen to learn about BSL and the deaf community and work with interpreters and Communication Support Workers teaching English to small groups of deaf students
• Able to adapt your practice with a flexible approach to teaching English at all levels from GCSE standard and be able to differentiate your practice to Entry Level
• Already a qualified Teacher of the Deaf looking for a change of provision and to contribute to our growing school
We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed teacher to join our skilled team in our Secondary provision in our school for deaf children.
The successful candidate will:
Be an innovative and patient classroom teacher with good subject knowledge of the GCSE English curriculum
Have excellent planning and differentiation skills in English- ranging from GCSE to functional skills and entry levels
Be a BSL user or be prepared to learn British Sign Language to level 2 and 3 over time
Be committed to working within a bilingual approach in teaching Deaf children and possibly train to be a Teacher of the Deaf in the future (it is a mandatory qualification after three years)
Elmfield is a small special school for deaf children, situated on two sites, Primary is in Westbury-on–Trym and the secondary department is based in Fairfield Academy in Horfield, Bristol. We are working with Bristol City Council to refurbish our school and 2020 will see some positive changes.
We work in British Sign Language and spoken English within a ‘sign bilingual’ environment.
We work closely with our partner secondary school peers at Fairfield Academy.
We have an inclusive secondary department where students enrol into a mainstream class tutor group and gain access to a range of subjects.
We offer specialist English, Maths and Science teaching and students work separately in these subjects.
We offer strong induction, Continuing Professional Development and coaching support.
