Teacher / Instructor of Land & Environment job summary

Pearson’s BTec level 1 Land Based Studies course offers students hands-on opportunities to work in the classroom and outside at various different locations. Assessment is based on submission of two portfolios of written and pictorial evidence. Students have the opportunity to complete a variety of modules to obtain credits which result in a BTEC Level 1 Certificate.

There are two compulsory units which are:

Unit A1: Being Organised usually focuses on Christmas themed work. In the past students have made door wreaths, table decorations, or other Christmas themed items to take home.

Unit A2: Developing a Personal Progression Plan. This explores opportunities post 16. There are visits from Careers advisers, The Police or any other areas that students show an interest in. Students also have an opportunity to visit BCA - the nearest Agricultural College.

One of the most popular optional units is LBS18, Aquatic Environments, where students help to maintain the school ponds on both sites and take part in citizen science projects, such as the Big River Watch.

Other optional units are usually based on horticulture, which involves planning, propagating seeds, plant and maintaining plants, managing the landscape and environment. The course involves some science, maths and helps to develop practical skills students can use in the real world.

Many students progress, post 16, to undertake a further qualifications at a local college such as Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA), Sparsholt College, Moulton College, Shuttleworth College, Aylesbury College and City of Oxford College or an apprenticeship.
