TEACHER OF ART / DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
Main / Upper Pay Ranges £31,650 to £49,084

Permanent, Part Time 0.6FTE

Required From 1 September 2025

Small enough to care, big enough to make a positive impact

We are recruiting for a Teacher of Art / Design Technology to join our team at Astley Community High School to work 0.6 FTE. This post comes at an exciting time as in September we are moving into our new build school, which will provide excellent facilities for the faculty to enjoy even more creative lessons.

You will join a highly focused team who are committed to delivering outstanding lessons, the faculty includes art, music, food technology and DT. Art across our two feeder middle schools engages students in projects which explore a parity of materials and techniques and focus upon specific skills or processes. Art in year 9 seeks to draw these experiences together into projects which cover all GCSE assessment objectives so that artist’s analysis is drawn together with observational work to inform the development of more individualised ideas and outcomes.

Art and Design at Key stages 4 and 5 begin with teacher-led experiences designed to refine skills and provide more advanced experience of theories, media or processes. As work is developed in year 10 and 12 students are encouraged to progressively self-negotiate and whole class teaching is gradually replaced by individual focused assessment and feedback tutorials.Projects in year 12 are designed specifically to push students out of their comfort zone and to encourage exploration of unfamiliar practices. Students are encouraged to select for work produced during year 10/12 to form the backbone of their portfolio/personal study units in year 11/13. At KS4 Art and Design and 3D design endorsements are offered. At KS5 all A level Art endorsements are available to students, but our most popular areas of study are Art, Craft and Design, Fine Art, and 3D Design.

Based in South East Northumberland with good standards of teaching and behaviour and a strong commitment to improvement, we believe passionately that every student should be enabled to succeed in all aspects of school life. Building on our ‘Good’ ratings by Ofsted, we continue to strive for further improvements.
As a relatively small school at Astley Community High School there is a real sense of community. Staff are able to fully get to know the students in both an academic and pastoral sense. Behaviour across the schools is good with the vast majority of students putting into practice our behaviour expectations of being ready, respectful and safe on a daily basis. Our students across the Year groups into the Sixth Form have a focus on wanting to learn - this helps to foster an attitude of wanting to achieve the best they can.
Visits to the school are also warmly welcomed and encouraged. Please contact Richard Goodman, Head of School ACHS on 0191 2371505 or email vacancies@svf.org.uk to make an appointment.
