Teacher of Art & Photography job summary

Our Art, Design and Technology Department is well respected and supported at Sir Thomas Fremantle. Despite being a small school, uptake at GCSE is healthy and above the national average, with large participation in clubs, trips, and events. We are now looking for a Photography and Art teacher who can help lead us from strength to strength!

Students at KS3 receive weekly 60-minute lessons in both Art and Design and Design Technology, following a diverse range of topics in classes of 25 students. Art topics taught include Craig Redman portraits, Mexican day of the dead lino printing, Miro sculptures inspired by kinaesthesia and clay projects exploring pop art and Gaudi’s architecture. Design technology follows 6 week rotations where students study Textiles, Food Technology, Graphic Design and Photography.

The department is well equipped. With DT lessons being taught in designated Food Technology rooms and in our brand-new Design Technology suite, housing desktops with access to the Adobe suite. There is a class set of sewing machines, embroidery equipment and the introduction of sublimation printing.

At KS4, we deliver Art, Craft and Design and Photography. Art Craft and Design is a well- established subject within Sir Thomas Fremantle. The course explores mark making through a range of mediums with in year 10, including clay, large scale street art and still life painting. Our very popular Photography course started in September 2022, and is flourishing and growing. Now taught in our new Design Technology Suite, students have access to studio lighting, a full Adobe package and a range of photography equipment. As we grow, we are looking for someone to help us develop and inspire our photographers to explore new photographic opportunities.

As we look to the future, the department will continue to grow, rolling out Art, Textiles and Graphic Design at GCSE within the next two academic years. We are passionate about delivering an exciting and high-quality curriculum and hope to expand our KS3 curriculum to include Ceramics and Product Design as of September 2025.

Students have access to Art Clubs each week, and each year the department supports the whole school production, creating props and set design to support our performing arts students. We offer yearly trips, taking students to Harry Potter Studios, Oxford Natural History Museum and Pitt Rivers Museum. Students also benefit from visiting workshops, taking part in Stop Motion, Wool Crafts and collaborations with local artists.

Should you have any questions about the Art, Design and Technology department, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We also have opportunities for TLR leadership roles such as Head of Year; if you’re looking for an additional role in your career.

Sir Thomas Fremantle is set in North Buckinghamshire for 11-16 year olds serving the local community. The school is in easy reach of Milton Keynes and Aylesbury. We benefit from great facilities – the school building was only opened in 2017.

Your professional development is really important to us. We want you to have the skills and training so you can flourish in your role. We care about your wellbeing and we want to work with you to ensure we do all we can to support you.
