Science and Biology Department
Science at Wirral Grammar School for Boys is a department of thirteen staff. Each member of the three departments is a specialist teacher in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. One is also responsible for the teaching of Psychology in school. There are 12 Science classrooms and all have ceiling mounted projectors.
Boys are currently taught a two year KS3 programme of study during Years 7 and 8 in mixed ability classes. At present, Year 7 have two periods of each Science a fortnight. Where possible, this is taught by a subject specialist.
In each Science, the five mixed ability classes become six in Year 9 to begin their GCSE studies. The specification taught is the AQA GCSE Biology. At present, all GCSE students are entered for three separate Science GCSEs.
In the Biology department hard work, and the teaching of Biology by specialist staff, has allowed us to gain 99% pass rates for the last five years. In the last academic year, 67 % of our candidates achieved A*/A grades. We are committed to improving standards in the department and the successful candidate will be expected to take a role in ensuring that we continue to provide the best possible education.
Approximately 40 Students study Biology, Chemistry and Physics at both AS and A2 level. At KS5 Biology, the AQA A level Biology syllabus is followed. A 97% pass rate in 2019 at A level, together with challenging and stimulating teaching, has made the course a popular choice in Y12. It would be beneficial if the successful candidate could contribute to the accomplishments of the department and teach the subject to this level.
Extra-curricular competitions and events provide excellent extension opportunities for our pupils. The department takes its responsibility of providing first-class teaching seriously and we take every opportunity to ensure that our candidates achieve the highest possible grades.
Core Purposes of this Role
The core purposes are:
• Having responsibility for standards of achievement and academic welfare of students
• Providing a lead on the development of resource materials appropriate for the needs of the students who you teach
• Applying and managing the assessment, target-setting and monitoring arrangements that are required by all members of staff
• Contributing to opportunities for the extra-curricular enrichment of Biology / Science teaching through lunch-time activities, visits and partnerships etc
• Being accountable to the Head of Biology for the attainment and achievement of pupils
• Assisting the Head of Biology with the development of new material for all key stages, including the sixth form practical endorsement.
Skills and competencies required
• A well qualified teacher of Biology / Science
• An individual who is passionate about Biology / Science and promotes enthusiasm and interest for the subject
• An ability to teach Biology through to A Level and Physics and Chemistry in KS3
• Experience of having taught across the full 11 to 18 age range and a willingness to do so.
• Experience of all ability teaching with a particular awareness of the needs of able students
• A high level of ICT competency; an ability to use ICT effectively in planning and teaching
• Ability to work within a team of well-qualified and highly professional individuals.
