Teacher of Criminology job summary
Ringwood School has offered vocational WJEC Level 3 Criminology since September 2023. It is a very popular and well-liked subject. Our current vacancy comes from the promotion in another school of one of our colleagues who teaches Criminology.
The course is currently taught by two colleagues who also offer an additional subject at A-Level. We are looking for a colleague who can offer an additional subject, alongside Criminology, either Psychology or (preferably) Sociology. We deliver the Cambridge OCR Sociology A-Level syllabus, offering dynamic and contemporary content designed to maximise student engagement. Our optional units focus on youth subcultures (including youth deviance), which lead naturally into the Crime and Deviance option. Consequently, a teacher with expertise in both Sociology and Criminology would be especially well suited to this role. EPQ tutoring is also a possibility, especially for a colleague looking for a Full-Time contract.
We have established a vibrant, forward-thinking department and provide a range of enriching activities to support student learning. These include visits to a prison, complete with an escape-room-style experience alongside a forensic CSI day where students conduct investigations using real-life equipment. We also welcome guest speakers such as prison officers and members of the police force. In addition, we have strong links with the Sociology and Criminology departments at Bournemouth University, who offer workshops and we organise collaborative events with other schools, and talks from visiting academics on issues such as inequality.
Our aim is to make learning as tangible and vocational as possible, extending student experiences far beyond the confines of the classroom.
We are interested in appointing a colleague with current or past connection to the judicial system in the UK, in either a paid or voluntary capacity.
The successful candidate will be joining a team of Post 16 teachers who are largely based in the sixth form block and who mostly solely teach sixth form. For a feel of life in our sixth form please see our website: https://www.ringwood.hants.sch.uk/
Our recent Ofsted report (Nov ’22) reads that: “Students in the sixth form perform very well. The sixth-form students speak highly of the subject choice and the high-quality teaching and learning they receive. Sixth-form students appreciate the individual tuition and quality careers advice that they receive.”
