At Merchants’ Academy Design and Technology is taught across all year groups, including Product Design at AS and A’ Level.
Our department is made up of highly-valued, experienced teachers and associate staff. We are a close-knit and supportive team who work well together, have high expectations, but also value kindness and humour.
Monitoring, assessment and feedback of class and homework ensures that students of all abilities are able to thrive in an environment where they feel supported but are also stretched and challenged.
Our curriculum in Years 7-9 will follow a model of three years rotation covering Food Technology, Textiles and Resistant Materials, culminating in students choosing their next course of study at the end of Year 9.
Across Years 10 & 11 for GCSE and Entry level our examining board is BTEC and WJEC level 1/2, and the course is Construction and Hospitality and Catering. We are looking to expand this to a GCSE covering resistant materials or product design. The ability to teach food at KS4 level would also be valuable.
The Design and Technology department has the following aims:
• Provide an outstanding education for all students, regardless of ability, in order to achieve
more than they thought possible
• Develop and encourage an appreciation of the value of design and a love of making and
creating
• Deliver the curriculum in a manner which encourages engagement whilst drawing on the
subject knowledge and skills of both staff and students
• Continually revise and improve the provision of the curriculum
• Extend the curriculum beyond the confines of the examination criteria
• Develop learners into considerate, confident, ambitious and motivated individuals
• Plan and deliver lessons that are interactive, engaging, differentiated and personalised
• Create a positive environment that supports and nurtures both staff and students alike
