The Design Technology Department at Ripon Grammar School

The Design Technology Department at Ripon Grammar School is a well‑established, forward‑thinking team with committed and enthusiastic staff teaching students from Year 7 through to the Upper Sixth (Year 13).

The department consists of four specialist Design Technology teachers supported by a full‑time technician. We are equipped with five dedicated specialist rooms, including:

  • a materials workshop with general manufacturing facilities
  • an electronics laboratory
  • a food technology room
  • two multi‑purpose rooms housing a computer suite, micro‑router, laser cutters, 3D printers, and additional manufacturing equipment

While staff typically have their own areas of expertise, you may be expected to teach the full DT curriculum at KS3 and play a significant role in our sixth form provision. At KS4, teaching commitments will be guided by student option choices, which are yet to be finalised.

Design Technology is an important element of our core curriculum and is studied by all students in KS3, with the carousel system providing experience in both Food Technology and Design Technology. At KS4, we currently deliver AQA Design & Technology to five classes and Eduqas GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition to three classes. At KS5, the department offers AQA Product Design A‑level, with one class running in both Year 12 and Year 13.

Across all key stages, our aim is to provide students with a contemporary, relevant experience of Design Technology. We strive to prepare young people for life in a rapidly evolving technological world—one in which they feel confident embracing change and capable of working with modern technologies.

Results across the department consistently exceed national averages. We also recognise the value of contextual learning and regularly organise enrichment opportunities, including visits to the Design Museum, Additive X, Instantprint, London-based tours, ECON, and the universities of Loughborough and Brunel.

Students frequently comment on the strength of the department. Some recent quotes include:

“I like the atmosphere of DT—it’s a very independent and varied subject.”

“I have found Design Technology constantly engaging because of the wide range of materials, techniques and products we use and create throughout school.”

“My favourite part of DT is the relaxed atmosphere and the encouragement of independent learning.”

“I like how you can tailor a project to show your own skills.”

“Knowledgeable and fun teachers make the DT experience very enjoyable.”

Ripon Grammar School

Ripon Grammar School is an outstanding, day and boarding, co-educational, selective grammar school, situated at the heart of the city of Ripon. We offer a broad academic curriculum which is challenging and inspiring. Added to first rate teaching, our students engender a strong work ethic and community of learning. While we value highly a spirit of independent learning, academic support and guidance, delivered via the tutorial system, is also excellent. Consequently GCSE and A Level results and ‘value added’ are, year on year, exceptionally strong each year whilst students have opportunities to develop a wide range of personal and social skills.

We value especially our ability to know our students as individuals. We encourage them to be involved in the school community, taking leadership roles and through supporting younger students. We are very proud of the student-led organisation of our annual charity week as well as their involvement in House events [including House Drama, House Debating and Sports Day].

Equally important is our broad enrichment programme which develops participation, leadership and confidence through such activities as weekly sport, an outstanding music programme, voluntary service, work experience and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, to name just a few. Alongside this programme there exists a vibrant society life which encompasses both academic societies and more broad political and community-based groups.

As the only state boarding school in Yorkshire, we have a thriving boarding community. This provides students with a ‘home from home’, but also gives them the sense of independence and experience of living within a community, thus providing a unique preparation for university life to come.

In summary, Ripon Grammar School is a dynamic and thriving community school which aims to stretch, challenge and support the students in as many ways as possible. If you are looking for an opportunity to get involved as well as teaching your subject with passion and enthusiasm to keen and enthusiastic learners, then Ripon Grammar School is the place for you.
