      About the Departments:

      Drama is thriving at AGS:.

All students in Years 7 - 9 receive an hour of Drama a week and then numbers at both GCSE and A level are consistently healthy - between 15 and 20 take Drama A level each year.

Year 7: we build a Drama ‘Toolbox’ of creating, performing and responding skills in order to assist students with their stage confidence. All of this is built on a foundation of collaboration and developing resilience, with students working cooperatively throughout the year and taking part in self and peer assessment. This is linked to a variety of social ideas, dramatic styles and forms of theatre: creating a news programme, exploring characterisation and play structure through melodrama, physical theatre & a miniature musical of Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Year 8: we focus on building a creative imagination and developing characterisation on stage and screen. We develop and foster the imagination through devising & stimuli: building characters, exploring dramatic structure, creating mood & atmosphere as well as developing verbal presentation skills. The content includes detective and ghost stories, a reworking of Shakespeare's Hamlet, Genre Mash-Ups & an Introduction to improvisation, reflection and script based exercises.

Year 9: we currently focus on developing longer project work to prepare students for the environment of GCSE Drama. We look at the practical exploration of theatre history, theatre as a social commentary and the development of a scripted performance using technical theatre. This journey includes modules in Stage Make-Up, ‘Shaking Up’ Shakespeare, Five Minute Films, Surrealism and Verbatim/Documentary Theatre. We also include the practical study and reworking of key extracts of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Written tasks in Year 9 look at research and development of their own creative ideas in order to present them in practice.

Years 10 & 11: at GCSE and A level, AGS currently follows the Edexcel Pearson specifications.

For much of the year, Drama lessons can be taught in our large theatre space, equipped with new staging, full lighting rig, sound system and tiered seating for almost 200 audience members. A dance studio in our Sports Hall is also available. Between now and September 2025, the school is also looking to invest in a secondary Drama ‘classroom/base’.

The extra-curricular life of the department is strong - in recent years productions have included A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Bugsy Malone. We very much hope that the person appointed can help to maintain and build upon this offering - which is so loved and valued by our students. Alcester is well situated within easy access to world class theatre - Stratford upon Avon, Birmingham, Oxford etc. are all accessible within an hour.

      English:

We deliver a challenging and rigorous curriculum to all students across KS3 and KS4, and recruit large numbers into the Sixth Form to study English Literature and/or English Language. A genuine passion for the subject and for developing research-informed practice is essential, as well as an understanding of how to diversify the curriculum to keep in step with a changing world.

      The AGS English Department will:

      • Empower students by developing advanced communication skills

      • Foster a lifelong love of words through literature and language study

      • Enable enquiring and critical engagement with others’ ideas

      • Encourage a sense of cultural identity.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in an outstanding academic environment with innovative and experienced colleagues and keen, well-motivated students.

The English curriculum - more information is available on the AGS website

We aim to give all members of the department the opportunity to teach across the full age range with about half the department experienced in teaching A Level English Language. As a department we have developed robust and challenging Programmes of Study. Comprehensive and well-resourced schemes of work are in place; teachers are encouraged to be creative and innovative in their classroom teaching.

KS3 In Years 7-9 students study a range of challenging literary texts and language topics, based on both spoken and written English. Lessons are typically interactive with a strong emphasis on shared talk to develop a personal voice within the classroom. We place an emphasis on technical accuracy and wider reading.

KS4 All members of the department are expected to teach GCSE and take a full role in planning, teaching and assessment. Students follow the GCSE AQA English Language and AQA English Literature specifications. KS4 classrooms are characterised by reflective questioning; we are open to new ideas and constantly striving to sharpen our practice and targeted student support.

KS5 AQA English Language and Edexcel English Literature. Students here enjoy A Level academic study. A significant number of our students go on to pursue English courses at University. We have a thriving LitSoc (Literature Society) and Creative Writing Club run by Sixth Formers, as well as a team of Student Librarians who run the KS3 Library.
