Teacher of English job summary
“Once you learn to read you will be free forever.” - Fredrick Douglass
Laurus Ryecroft is seeking a passionate Teacher of English to join their team and help maintain their high standards of exceptional teaching and learning. The ideal candidate will have a genuine enthusiasm for English, both inside and outside the classroom. This position is open to both experienced educators and newly qualified teachers.
Our curriculum will endeavour to provide pupils with the powerful knowledge, which can too often be hidden from view. In doing so, our aim is to provide students with the knowledge to make the implicit, explicit. The powerful knowledge curriculum in English will be deliberately and coherently sequenced to take the shape of a chronological narrative; a narrative that aims to support pupils in making sense of both the literary canon and texts from across a rich, cultural spectrum of literature.
Our KS3 English curriculum is content-rich and chronologically structured, spanning the entire literary canon to help students develop a clear and connected understanding of our literary heritage. Students explore the evolution of ideas, themes and writer intentions across time and across cultures, enabling them to build a deep, sense‑making narrative of literary history. At KS4, our curriculum is designed to teach beyond the exam requirements. Both Language and Literature are taught through interleaving, retrieval practice and ongoing cycles of study, mirroring the demands of the linear GCSE courses. Our approach strengthens long-term memory, builds student confidence, and ensures a consistent routine that supports mastery of skills and knowledge. The Language curriculum follows a thematic structure, allowing purposeful links to be made with the texts, contexts and concepts studied in Literature. Alongside our KS3 and KS4 provision, we have a strong whole‑school commitment to developing students’ spoken language skills. Through our Oracy Curriculum, we ensure all students become effective, articulate speakers and listeners who know when to lead and when to participate.
