What skills and experience we're looking for

The English Department is a highly successful and mutually supportive team of specialist staff. We follow the Co-Headteachers’ model of leadership and have two Co-Heads of English.

Our aim is to ensure that our curriculum caters for all levels of achievement to increase the confidence of individuals and foster an enthusiasm for the subject. We pride ourselves on having high expectations of our pupils. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups with each group being taught for eight hours per fortnight in KS3 and nine hours per fortnight in KS4.

Reading is a key focus of the school and is spearheaded by the English Department. All of our students are expected to read widely outside of school. Our lessons take place in eight well-equipped classrooms. We have access to a well-developed resources area; the use of the library; a computer media suite; and other ICT facilities.

We are forward-thinking, enthusiastic and committed; we are all reflective practitioners and strive every year to improve our quality-first teaching.

Further information about the school’s English curriculum can be found on the school website: www.hastings.school

What the school offers its staff

Thank you for your interest in this post. This is a part time (but full time may be available for the right candidate) permanent position, beginning in late August 2025.

The school was judged ‘Good’ at our last Ofsted inspection. We are committed to further improvement to ensure that we provide “Care and Excellence for All”.

The school has had significant investment in the last 12 months to build 8 new classrooms, a sports hall alongside redevelopment of the canteen and main pastoral areas. This will enable us to take extra pupils starting with a cohort of 200 in Year 7 in Autumn 2025.

We have a strong academic record with each of the previous 4 years, having achieved a progress 8 score “above average” achieving a score of +0.40 last year. Our predictions for the future year groups are that they will exceed this. These continuing improvements are down to our focus on the basics; an orderly climate for learning, engaging teaching and building positive relationships with all stakeholders.

We have a comprehensive induction programme for new staff to help you settle in and provide very high levels of support. We are a school which strives to bring out the best in our staff by investing heavily in staff development and wellbeing. This post would be suitable for an ECT, or a more experienced candidate.

Commitment to safeguarding

Our organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment.

Our recruitment process follows the keeping children safe in education guidance.
