Teacher of English job summary
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and committed Teacher of English to join our dedicated team at Shelley College on a maternity cover basis. This is an exciting opportunity for an inspiring classroom practitioner who is passionate about delivering high‑quality English teaching and helping students achieve their full potential.
In this role, you will play an important part in delivering a broad, balanced and engaging English curriculum that supports students of all abilities. You will work closely with colleagues in the English department, the Senior Leadership Team and wider staff to support the continuous improvement of teaching, learning and student outcomes across the school.
The role involves planning and delivering high‑quality lessons, monitoring and supporting the progress of students, and contributing to a positive and purposeful learning environment. You will also take on the responsibilities of a form tutor, helping to support students’ personal development, wellbeing and academic progress. As with all teaching roles at Shelley College, you will play a part in safeguarding students and maintaining a safe, nurturing and supportive school environment.

The Ideal Candidate will:
- Hold Qualified Teacher Status and a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
- Have successful experience teaching English at GCSE, with the ability to teach A‑level an advantage.
- Demonstrate excellent classroom practice, with the ability to inspire and motivate students of all abilities.
- Communicate clearly and form positive, professional relationships with students, colleagues and families.
- Have strong behaviour management skills and foster a purposeful learning environment.
- Be confident in planning and delivering high‑quality lessons, homework and assessments.
- Use data effectively to identify gaps, track progress and plan interventions to support student achievement.
- Be committed to safeguarding, student wellbeing and maintaining a safe learning environment.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and be reflective in their practice.
- Contribute to the wider life of Shelley College, including extra‑curricular opportunities.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm, resilience and a commitment to helping students achieve their personal best.
Overall Purpose of the role:
As a Teacher of English you will be required to meet the general requirements of this post, as specified in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document. In addition, you will be required to fulfil any reasonable expectations from the Principal.
The post will require you to work in partnership with the Principal, Senior Leadership Team, governors and staff to ensure the continuous improvement of the Academy.
This role will also require the post holder to work in other school settings under the direction of the Principal.
Safeguarding Requirement:
This post requires the post holder to work in settings with children and young adults. Any employment offer is therefore subject to the results of an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). People who may have contact with younger children (i.e. primary school age) are also required to complete a declaration about family or other members of their household.
Applicants will be required to provide evidence of identity and qualifications and offers of employment will be subject to satisfactory references. For applicants who work or have recently worked in a school, one of the references must be from the Head.

- Successful experience or the ability to teach subject at A Level
- Detailed knowledge of current developments in subject area for all levels including sixth form
- Knowledge of innovating teaching and learning strategies
- Highly competent in ICT and the use of computers
- A willingness to be fully involved in the wider life of Shelley College, including extra-curricular activities.
