Food is a popular and highly valued subject within our Design and Technology curriculum and plays a key role in delivering our ambition to provide a high-quality, ambitious and inclusive curriculum for all students. The department benefits from excellent, well-resourced specialist facilities and a broad, engaging curriculum offer, supported by an established and experienced team of six staff, including two specialist Food teachers, who share a genuine passion for their subject and are committed to inspiring this in the students they teach. Outcomes across the department are strong, reflecting the quality of teaching and the engagement of students.

At Key Stage 3, students study Food throughout the year, developing core practical skills, knowledge of nutrition and an understanding of how to prepare and cook a wide range of dishes. Food is a particularly popular area of the curriculum, with high levels of engagement from students.

The department is housed in purpose-built specialist spaces, including two specialist workshops, dedicated classroom spaces and a computer suite for design and CAD/CAM work. We will shortly be moving into two brand new food rooms and two newly refurbished textiles rooms, which will further enhance our provision and support high-quality practical teaching, enabling students to develop confidence, independence and a wide range of practical skills. The department is well resourced with a wide range of specialist equipment and also benefits from the support of five dedicated technicians, including two who support within Food.

Class sizes within Design and Technology are typically kept below 21 students, supporting a safe, well-managed environment and enabling high-quality practical teaching and learning.

At Key Stage 4, we offer GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition alongside GCSE Design & Technology and GCSE Art: Fashion & Textiles. Uptake in Food Preparation & Nutrition is strong, with four groups currently studying the course. This strong uptake continues into Key Stage 5, where students can currently progress to A Level Design & Technology. Food is also offered as an enrichment option in the Sixth Form, providing students with further opportunities to develop their interest and practical skills. With the investment in our new food rooms, we are also keen to explore the introduction of a Level 3 Food qualification at Post 16.

The department offers a strong co-curricular programme, including termly bake-off competitions as part of the school’s house system and participation in the Rotary Young Chef competition. Students are also provided with opportunities to further develop their practical skills and interest in Food beyond the classroom, alongside wider Design and Technology activities such as F1 in Schools and inter-house competitions.

We warmly welcome applications from candidates with a passion for Food education, who can build on existing strengths and further develop the curriculum to ensure it is ambitious, coherent and inclusive for all students.

The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues to deliver high-quality teaching, support curriculum development and contribute to the continued success of the department. There is a strong focus on developing independent learners, establishing clear routines within practical lessons, and ensuring a consistent experience for all students.

This role would suit an enthusiastic and reflective teacher who is passionate about Food and committed to delivering engaging, high-quality practical lessons that inspire students.
