THE VACANCY

Teacher of Geography at Cambourne Village College and

Cambourne Sixth Form

Contract: Permanent/Full time

Starting Salary: MPS/UPS

Required: September 2025

The College is currently seeking a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of Geography.

Cambourne Village College is an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rated, over-subscribed secondary school, eight miles from Cambridge. We opened as an academy of the Cam Academy Trust in September 2013. Our ethos is aspirational and inclusive, our staff are highly motivated, our pupils courteous and hard-working, and we have excellent facilities. Joining Cambourne Village College represents a unique opportunity to work in a newly established school within a wider, high-quality Academy Trust that gives excellent possibilities for professional and career development.

It is an exciting time to join our teaching staff at Cambourne Village College. Already a well-established and successful school, the addition of our Sixth Form, which opened in September 2024, marks the final phase of our expansion. We are ambitious for our Sixth Form to reflect the successes of our main school, where results are consistently strong, with excellent Progress 8 scores.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about delivering high quality Geography lessons and can instil in pupils a sense of awe and wonder about the world.  The successful candidate will be able to develop warm relationships with learners of all ages and ability levels and support the school’s inclusive ethos in all aspects of their classroom practice. This is a unique opportunity to join an expanding department, to help it grow, and to play an important part in its future success. Further details are provided on the Job Description and Person Specification.

The Geography Department is a team of highly dedicated subject specialists, teaching a meticulously planned and engaging curriculum; students look forward to their Geography lessons.  We challenge our pupils and lead them to gain a genuine appreciation of the world around them.  We are passionate about the teaching and learning of Geography, constantly striving to achieve strong outcomes for all students across the ability range and to provide rigorous and varied learning experiences both in and out of school.

At KS3, students are taught in mixed-ability groups for 3 lessons per fortnight.  The KS3 course is regularly reviewed to ensure the best progression possible to GCSE level, where we follow the AQA GCSE specification.  Geography is a popular option choice at GCSE; a high standard of teaching and learning across the department has ensured an outstanding set of GCSE results over the past years. In recent sets of public examinations, the results at Grades 1-9 put the department in the top 5% of Geography departments nationally for pupil progress at KS4. We are incredibly excited to be offering GCSE Geology for the first time this September, a unique opportunity for students to pursue a qualification in Earth Sciences and strengthen their conceptual understanding. We are excited to be delivering Geography A Level (OCR specification) for the first time in our new Sixth Form; the department has extensively planned and resourced the KS5 course with expanding numbers for the next academic year. We also offer A Level Environmental Science, and there may be an opportunity for the right candidate to contribute to teaching this course.

The Department is fully committed to delivering high quality fieldwork locally and further afield, with both KS3 and 4 students experiencing physical and human fieldwork in Cambridgeshire, London, and coastal locations in Norfolk and Dorset. We are running a KS4 enrichment trip to Iceland in summer 2025. Teaching takes place in dedicated Geography classrooms, each with a whiteboard and projector. Teachers are also provided with a laptop and iPad to facilitate pupils’ learning. All pupils have their own iPad at Cambourne VC, and we regularly integrate these in lessons for research, GIS, and revision.

The Department currently holds the Secondary Geography Quality Mark with additional achievement for Centre of Excellence (in Geography fieldwork). Current developmental priorities focus on integrating challenging reading into the curriculum, and refining assessment in KS3.

We look forward to hearing from candidates with a positive, student-centred mindset and a passion for working collaboratively and bringing Geography alive for all learners. For any other information and to arrange a visit, please contact Brad Dickerson: BDickerson@cambournevc.org.

Pre-application visits to the College are welcomed.

Cambourne Village College, an academy of The Cam Academy Trust, opened in brand new premises in September 2013 with just five forms of Year 7 pupils. Serving one of the fastest-growing communities in the UK, we now have more than 1300 pupils on roll, with major further expansion planned, including the opening of our new sixth form centre in September 2024.

The College has enjoyed remarkable success since opening, gaining an early Ofsted Outstanding rating along with designation as a Leading Edge School. Our pupils achieve excellent results in public examinations via a curriculum designed to offer maximum breadth and opportunity for all abilities. Our extra-curricular offer is also outstanding: annual musical drama performances, termly concerts, a wide range of competitive and recreational sporting activities, and many further clubs and events are on offer. In 2019, we were granted the International School Award by the British Council and are looking forward to re-launching our programme of international visits and exchanges this year.

We strive to be a welcoming and inclusive school for our pupils and also to fulfil our Village College ethos in serving the whole community: we support an active adult education programme and more than 30 local groups and organisations make use of the school’s facilities, out of hours. This unusual commitment to our local community was a key factor in our winning a prestigious Silver Award in the ‘Making a Difference’ category of the Pearson School of the Year celebrations in 2018.
