About the Role
We are seeking an accomplished, passionate, and dedicated Peripatetic Teacher of Guitar (Acoustic, Electric, and Bass) to support our vibrant Music Department.
The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic educator capable of engaging and inspiring students through high-quality 1-to-1 and 2-to-1 instruction. You will bring strong subject knowledge, high expectations for student progress, and a genuine drive to nurture musical development—guiding students from their very first chords through to advanced graded examinations and live performances.
Key ResponsibilitiesInspirational Teaching: Deliver engaging, age-appropriate acoustic, electric, and bass guitar lessons (20 and 30-minute sessions) to pupils across varying abilities during term-time.
Ensemble Leadership: Run an exciting after-school music club (Rockschool), fostering teamwork and contemporary band performance skills.
Performance & Progression: Prepare students for internal and external performances, including music scholarships, school concerts, and examinations (e.g., Rockschool, RGT, Trinity, ABRSM). Accompany pupils in examinations where possible and appropriate.
Administration & Reporting: Set clear individual practice targets, maintain accurate digital registers using school software, and provide termly written reports to parents.
Health, Safety & Discipline: Maintain good order, discipline, and a safe learning environment. Actively promote the safety, health, and wellbeing of all pupils under your care.
Communication & Collaboration: Communicate effectively and purposefully with pupils, parents, and carers. Work collaboratively to build professional relationships with colleagues within the Music Department and the wider school.
Personal & Professional Conduct: Uphold public trust in the teaching profession by maintaining high ethical standards, punctuality, and attendance. Align with the ethos, policies, and statutory frameworks of Hertswood Academy.
Musicianship: High proficiency across acoustic, electric, and bass guitar techniques (Degree in Music/Performance or equivalent industry experience is desirable).
Experience: Proven experience teaching guitar and bass to young people, alongside track records in exam preparation and coaching contemporary rock bands/ensembles.
Classroom Management: The ability to plan 20/30-minute lessons dynamically and manage student behavior effectively in both 1-to-1 and small-group club settings.

Work in strict accordance with statutory safeguarding guidance (e.g., Keeping Children Safe in Education, Prevent) and school child protection policies.
Work collaboratively with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) to share concerns and protect the best interests of pupils.
Be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
