Teacher of History (Maternity Cover) job summary
As the Principal of Manor Church of England Academy I am delighted to share this opportunity and introduce our school to you. Manor has a proud history, having served the young people of York for over 210 years. We are a Church of England Academy and our Christian values guide, influence and underpin all that we do. We are a member of the Hope Sentamu Learning Trust, a growing family of schools working together to transform education across York, Hull and North Yorkshire. We are blessed to have state of the art facilities and supportive families, however our greatest assets are the over 1,100 young people enrolled with us and the 140 highly gifted teaching and support staff that work in our academy. Our aim is that all students and staff 'serve others, grow together and live life to the full'.
There are four other teachers in the History Department. The History and Geography Departments combine as the Humanities Faculty. We currently have three History classrooms equipped with whiteboards and projectors. The successful candidate is likely to have his or her own classroom for all lessons.
Pupils in Years 8-11 have iPads which are regularly used to support their work. Chromebook trolleys can be booked for use with pupils in Year 7. Google Classroom is regularly used as a platform for the setting and marking of work, though we still expect much work to be hand-written. Key Stage 3 runs throughout Years 7 to 9. It covers British history from the Anglo-Saxons to the present day, as well as units of local, European and world history.
At GCSE most pupils studying history take an AQA course comprising America, 1920-1973; Conflict and Tension, 1894-1918; Britain, Power and the People, c.1170-present day and Medieval England, the Reign of Edward I, 1272-1307.

The main focus of the Subject Teacher's role is fostering the learning and progress of the pupils in their care. This involves being an effective teacher of pupils as well as of the subject. Quality of preparation, resourcing, planning, subject expertise, teaching skill, pace, challenge, proactive classroom management, effective marking and assessment, high expectations, and positive personal relationships are all central to providing the conditions within which pupils' personal skills, abilities, understanding, learning and progress can be developed.
