Teacher of History
Full time / Permanent
Start Date – 1st September 2025
Salary: MPS/UPS (£31,660 - £49,084)
About the role:
Our humanities faculty offers a wide range of subjects, including history which is taught at key stage 3 and as an extremely popular subject at GCSE level, delivering good outcomes and impressive post-16 engagement levels. We are looking for an ambitious individual to contribute to the teaching of history. This is a fantastic opportunity for those new to teaching who want to make a mark and get their career off to a flying start, but equally suitable for those with experience as we will honour the salary you are entitled to. We have excellent provision for early career teachers and a great package of additional professional development.
Our school
The Hathershaw College is a very successful and oversubscribed 11-16 Academy. You will see from our Ofsted report that we have retained our good status. I would advise you to read the excellent report before applying. Key highlights from this include:
“Pupils behave sensibly around the school and in lessons. They are respectful to other pupils, staff and visitors.”
“Staff value the steps that leaders have taken to ease their workload and support their well-being.”
We have an excellent reputation for professional development and providing opportunities for people to progress their career.
Managing the well-being and workload of staff is something taken extremely seriously by the Principal, having already taken steps to reduce unnecessary burdens and bureaucracy. These radical actions were rated highly in the most recent staff survey, which takes place on an annual basis. As a result of this and many other factors, staff describe Hathershaw as “a great place to work”. We really want you to have a life outside of the classroom so that you can enjoy everything the area has to offer.
We have recently replaced our performance management policy with a trust-wide staff development and improvement policy. Whilst we expect high standards from our staff, this new policy no longer links the completion of objectives to pay progression. We also allow eligible staff to move through the pay spine on an annual basis, including those on UPS, meaning that you are able to progress to the highest pay scales in a much shorter period of time than some schools and trusts.
Our trust
Alongside Oldham Sixth Form College (OSFC), Werneth Primary School, Broadfield Primary School and Alexandra Park Junior School, we are part of the Pinnacle Learning Trust. Together, our mission is to celebrate students’ uniqueness and support our young people to flourish and become responsible, successful citizens who contribute positively to their communities. Our trust invests in each member of staff, offering them professional development opportunities, including designation as Evidence Leads in Education for the Research School; delivery of school-to-school support; professional development facilitation and support for trainee teachers. Staff have access to opportunities to develop their teaching practice, such as training on metacognition, virtual classroom coaching and retrieval practice. As a trust, we celebrate diversity by encouraging an understanding of our communities, faiths and cultures.
