• In Year 7, students build their digital literacy by using a range of software and web apps. They are introduced to networks, the Internet and smart devices, and they begin block-based programming, learning sequence, selection and iteration. Safety topics while gaining hands on experience with computers and common applications. They are introduced to networks, the Internet and smart devices, and they begin block based programming, learning sequence, selection and iteration.
• In Year 8, students deepen their digital literacy through practical work with varied software and online tools. They extend their programming knowledge by creating more advanced Scratch projects and learning how subroutines help structure programs. They study binary, denary conversion and basic logic gates using truth tables. Students apply computational thinking through flowcharts and pseudocode and are introduced to Python, where they practise sequence, selection, iteration and debugging syntax errors.
• In Year 9, students build on their existing knowledge with a strong focus on programming, cybersecurity and data science. They revisit binary and explore how computers store different types of data, including images and audio. Their Python skills develop further through work on programming constructs, data types and libraries such as random. Students then use these skills in a substantial programming project involving planning, development, testing and evaluation, supported by effective use of subroutines.
• At KS4, students follow the GCSE Computer Science specification, which combines programming and theory. They rapidly develop their coding skills and complete a substantial programming project using all required constructs. Theory lessons cover the core GCSE content, including Computer Systems, Boolean Logic, Algorithms, Cybersecurity and Data Representation, while programming lessons focus on applying techniques to exam style problems. In Year 11, students study additional topics such as searching and sorting algorithms, computer networks and the impact of computing, with an increased focus on real world cybercrime.
• For the next academic year we may consider a different KS4 course for our students.
• The ICT department has a positive interest around the subject at KS4 and our intent is to grow the subject further. After school intervention is a key aspect within the team and all subjects run at least one session per week as well as a KS3 club.
