We are looking to appoint an inspirational, enthusiastic, and well-qualified Teacher of Mathematics, to include A Level Mathematics, at this Outstanding sixth form college. The post is open to new entrants to the profession as well as experienced teachers. The ability to contribute to more than one course within the department would be an advantage.
A trainee would also be considered, commencing June 2026, with a requirement to undertake a locally based 2-year part time PGCE course from September 2026 alongside ‘on the job’ training with remission time being given. (See separate details.)
Applicants should be hardworking, enthusiastic, team-focused and have a high level of commitment. They should have an interest in new developments and a specific ability and focus in fostering the learning and success of 16-19-year-old students. Experienced candidates should be able to evidence excellent levels of value-added achievement and, for Post 16 work, retention levels. A high level of integrity is required.
Specific duties involve those expected of a professional teacher as detailed on the attached teaching job description. A pastoral role, most likely that of a personal tutor may also be required.
Nature of the Department and Courses Offered
There is a team of fourteen teaching staff in the department for the 2025/26 academic year. The department offers A level Mathematics (Edexcel), Further Maths (OCR) and Statistics (Edexcel), Core Maths, GCSE Maths (AQA) and other L2 and L1 Maths courses (Edexcel). Full time staff have designated responsibilities, but all staff are involved in the duties of the department and there is a culture of critical evaluation and improvement. Colleagues are keen to look at ways of improving teaching and learning and student performance in the department and act on them.
Approximately 300 students currently study one of the A level Mathematics courses in year 12 and approximately 280 students study a Maths course to A Level in year 13. Keen and very able mathematicians are also offered Maths Challenge/Olympiad opportunities and STEP preparation. In addition, around 150 students per year ‘re-take’ GCSE Mathematics to seek to improve the grade 3 they achieved in Year 11 at school. There are also approximately 30 students per year who have grade 2 or 1 at GCSE on entry who take L1 stepping stone qualifications in preparation for a GCSE resit. In Core Maths, the Critical Analysis and Statistics options are offered with around 120 Year 12 students studying the subject across the two options - with the exams and assessments completed at the end of Year 12.
More information regarding the specific courses can be found in the Course Information Sheets which can be located via the Courses tab on the College website home page.
The Mathematics Department has a strong team working ethos, is very supportive and excellent schemes of work and resources are in place. A mentor will work with the appointee to support their development. There is also an excellent college wide support and development programme for all new staff.
