What skills and experience we're looking for
POST OF TEACHER OF MATHS, FULL TIME: IMMEDIATE/JANUARY 2025
We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic teacher to join the Maths department, which is one of the largest in the school. There are currently seven members of the Maths teaching staff; all are subject specialists with one member of the team teaching both Maths and Economics. Applications will be accepted full-time or part-time (minimum 0.8 FTE).
The post arises as a result of school expansion and offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic candidate to join a highly successful, supportive and inspirational department, building even further on its success. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about the subject, an outstanding classroom teacher and keen to join a department eager to inspire pupils to develop their skills and foster their interests to the very highest level, both within and beyond the classroom.
Maths at Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School (TWGGS) is a thriving and extremely popular subject which achieves outstanding results at all levels. At GCSE 56% of pupils in 2024 gained grades 9-7 for Maths. At A level 76% of pupils gained A*-B. Maths is a popular subject at A level with consistently strong cohort numbers of 60-70 pupils across the Lower and Upper Sixth each year. A number of A level pupils go on to study Maths and related subjects at top universities with notable success. You will be joining a highly experienced department which is constantly updating resources and implementing a wider range of methodologies to increase pupils’ interest and enthusiasm in Maths.
There are currently 5 Maths classes in each year, with Year 7 being taught in 6 mixed ability form groups, and setting being introduced at the beginning of Year 8. (This will increase further from September 2024.) In Year 8 there is a Set A1, a Set A2 and three parallel B sets, and from Year 9 onwards there are Sets A1, A2 and A3 with two parallel B groups. Our GCSE curriculum is organised into a three year programme starting in Year 9 in order to incorporate the changes in the new GCSE specification and adopt the “Fluency, Strengthen and Extend” nature of the curriculum that Edexcel encourages. All GCSE students are entered for the Edexcel Higher papers.
The school works to a fortnightly timetable of 48 one hour lessons. The specifications and time allowances for the subjects are:
A Level Edexcel Mathematics 9 lessons; (2 teachers)
Edexcel Further Mathematics 8 lessons for Further Maths in Year 12
5 lessons for Further Maths in Year 13
GCSE Edexcel GCSE Higher 6 lessons in Year 11
6 lessons in Year 10
6 lessons in Year 9
AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics for set A1 amalgamated within Yr 10 and 11
Key Stage 3 Year 9 6 lessons
Year 8 5 lessons
Year 7 7 lessons
There is a Maths Clinic once a week for any pupil to drop in and ask for help, which is run by the department and Sixth Form prefects. Our Sixth Formers are also keen to become mentors for younger pupils. We participate in the UKMT Maths challenges and team challenges, as well as running a successful Maths Fun Day for Year 7 in the summer term. The department consists of 6 teaching rooms within the ground floor of the Centenary Building, all teachers having their own teaching area. Each room has access to the internet and a digital projector and there are also class sets of lap-tops which are bookable for some lessons. There are several ICT rooms within the school, which can be booked.
