Teacher of Maths job summary

Our Mathematics Department

Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School provides the opportunity to teach some fantastic mathematicians.

We follow the Edexcel syllabus at both A Level and GCSE. Last year 91% of our Year 11 students achieved a Grade 9 - 7 and a significant proportion of students supplement the GCSE with either the AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics or OCR Additional Mathematics qualification. The majority choose to study Mathematics at A Level where they are joined by a number of talented mathematicians from other schools. Mathematics is the most popular option in our Sixth Form with around 200 students taking A Level Mathematics in each of Year 12 and Year 13 (and around 60 of those also studying Further Mathematics). Our most recent cohort of Year 13 students achieved 85% A* - B in Mathematics A Level and 83% A* - B in Further Mathematics.

Our scheme of work includes both challenge and depth and students across the school enter the UKMT Mathematics Challenges. Outside the classroom there are Junior and Intermediate Problem Solving Clubs, a Pre-University Admissions Test Support Programme, a Cipher Challenge team and a student-run Mathematics Society. We also run peer-mentoring and support sessions to help students build confidence and progress with their mathematical studies.

The Mathematics Department is housed in the Richards-Randon STEM Block, a modern facility that was opened in 2016. Our classrooms are spacious and all fitted with a touchscreen display. Staff in the department are all given a desk space in one of our two Mathematics Offices.

The teachers within the department work closely as a team: sharing resources, discussing pedagogical techniques and contributing to a friendly and supportive environment. There is a collaborative atmosphere, while teachers retain the autonomy to be innovative and deliver lessons in their own style to challenge and stimulate our students.
