Teacher of Maths job summary

This vacancy offers an exciting opportunity to join the Mathematics Department at Alderman White School.

As a Teacher of Maths, you will join a cohesive and friendly team who all care for, support and help one another. This is a talented department, built on meaningful relationships between both colleagues and pupils.

We have a strong culture of collaboration and mentoring, which has been embedded and developed over the past decade alongside a longstanding partnership with the University of Nottingham’s School of Education. All teachers of Maths contribute to the mentoring of PGCE students and to pedagogic strategies as part of sharing best practice, whilst also engaging in their own continuous professional development.

Teachers of Maths at Alderman White are offered plenty of support but are also afforded autonomy in their own classrooms; operating within a clearly set out curriculum, but with the freedom to plan lessons that truly adapt to the strengths, needs and interests of the pupils they teach. We have plenty of resources (both physical and online) to support with this.

As well as delivering the AQA GCSE Maths qualification, we also offer the FML2 in year 11 to challenge our highest attaining pupils, as well as the UKMT Maths Challenge at Junior and Intermediate levels.

We teach KS3 in fully mixed attainment groups to support an inclusive approach to educating our young people in the fundamentals of the subject regardless of their background, before moving to a setting model at GCSE. In all lessons, pupils should experience a positive learning environment where they feel confident to explore mathematical concepts with their peers, develop problem-solving skills and build resilience.

A concerted effort is made to ensure that teacher workload is both meaningful and manageable, by utilising dialogic teaching and innovative approaches to assessment and feedback; with collaboration, questioning and discussion central to learning.

As a Teacher of Maths, you will be expected to bring a passion for the subject and for working with young people into the classroom to help inspire our pupils to achieve their potential, whilst upholding high standards of behaviour and safeguarding, consistently using established school systems for both. You may also contribute to extra-curricular activities and enrichment and will take on the role of Form Tutor.

Alderman White School is a friendly, thriving and stimulating place to work and study. Our students are well-behaved and motivated. We have excellent support from parents and the community, and a talented and positive staff team. We are ambitious for every student and provide high-quality pastoral care and support, as well as outstanding enrichment opportunities for our students and the local community.

Staff wellbeing and development is very important to us - we offer a strong sense of community, high quality staffroom facilities and a carefully tailored staff development programme, centralised behaviour system, a feedback policy which takes account of workload, and access to health services through the Schools Advisory Service. PPA time is above the statutory requirement and can be taken off site.

The school is conveniently located 5 minutes from Junction 25 of the M1, close to the A52, as well as tram and bus routes, in a suburban area close to Nottingham University.

Our membership of White Hills Park Trust, a small local Trust of diverse schools with a common ethos and values, provides excellent opportunities for further professional development and networking.
