What skills and experience we're looking for

This part-time 4 day post for a Teacher of Music is available from September 2026 and is an exciting opportunity to join an extremely successful and thriving Department. The successful candidate will be required to teach across the ability range at KS3, KS4 and A Level. A full-time post will be considered for candidates with the ability to teach a second subject

At Charles Darwin we are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced teacher or an outstanding ECT (preferably with the capacity to teach to A Level) who is keen to adopt and implement the new innovative strategies now in place in the Music curriculum. You should be willing to work independently and alongside the current Department members to ensure the achievement of all taught students.

Music is currently part of the Expressive Arts Faculty which includes Music, Dance and Drama. The department offers a broad range of qualifications to meet the academic range of the school’s students. These include GCSE Music and a Vocational Award in Music Technology at KS4, and A Level Music and Music Technology at KS5.

The department has seen some outstanding results over the last 3 years. KS4 results were 100% 9-4 for GCSE Music in 2025 and we had a record result of 55% grades 7-9 which was impressive. Our Vocational Award in Music Technology equally has a particularly good track record of results – also 100% Level 2 Pass to Level 2 Distinction in 2025. A Level Music and Music Technology is particularly successful with results consistently above national averages, especially in Music Technology. Our KS3 projects have been designed to engage the younger years and encourage students to study a range of musical styles and genre through performance, composition and listening activities.

The department is a strong, friendly team of well-qualified teachers who look forward to new approaches to teaching Music and to engage the students and raise their attainment. The department works closely with other subjects within the Expressive Arts Faculty in a number of joint projects over the school year. These include a musical production each year, as well as the Music Department calendar of extra-curricular activities and events.

The Department consists of 3 main teaching rooms and a Recording Studio, as well as a suite of 8 practice rooms.

The department is supported by a Music Technician and a team of peripatetic instrumental tutors.

Charles Darwin School is a highly successful co-educational comprehensive school for students aged 11-18 which has been serving the local community since 1973.
