We are seeking a talented, committed and ambitious teacher to work in our excellent Religious Philosophy and Ethics Department.

The Religion, Philosophy and Ethics department is committed to the principle that profound and thought-provoking content can be accessed by students of all abilities and aims to challenge students to broaden their thinking by engaging with a wide range of religious and philosophical questions through the curriculum.

Due to changes in the department, we can offer a TLR to suitable candidates (not applicable to ECT’s), who will have the opportunity to lead on a Key Stage in accordance with their strengths. Specifics of the additional responsibilities will be confirmed after appointment in collaboration with the Head of Department.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum is based within the three disciplines of theology, philosophy, and social sciences, with topics exploring the key substantive content through the focus of the discipline to provide a specific focus of enquiry. Year 7 primarily focuses on the Abrahamic traditions, with Year 8 taking on a Dharmic focus, and Year 9 building on both of these to consider some more synoptic topics, and due to having equal curriculum time to the other Humanities subjects we are able to cover topics in depth to strengthen student understanding of each concept.

When students reach Key Stage 4, they can opt to follow the OCR J625 course, where we focus on Christianity and Islam as our chosen religions, mirroring the fact that these are the largest defined faith groups on both the national and global level. All students also partake in a Core RE provision that is focused on the concept of lived religion in the 21st Century, and how belief influences both religious and non-religious individuals in the world today. As part of this, students encounter a wide range of topics, which allow them to apply their knowledge from Key Stage 3, and which support the learning of those following the GCSE course. All Key Stage 4 students are also given the opportunity to visit local places of worship to deepen their understanding of religion in a modern and multicultural Britain.

For Sixth Form students we offer the opportunity to study the AQA Philosophy course, which is an academically rigorous course, that challenges students to engage with epistemology, moral philosophy and metaphysical views on both God and the mind, it will allow students to challenge their thinking in new ways. As a department we aim to offer the opportunity for all staff to teach across the age range, including Sixth Form teaching, and will look to offer the chance to focus on areas of specialism where appropriate, while providing professional development to ensure all members of the team are supported to be in a position to impart at least one section of the course.

As a department there is a focus on collaboration and utilising the strengths and specialisms of each member of the team, allowing us to share planning and resourcing of lessons, and supporting each other with ensuring that the challenging concepts are made accessible to all students in our fully comprehensive setting. At all Key Stages we also utilise the school 1:1 iPad scheme to provide students with different ways to engage with resources, topics and information, all designed to enhance the learning of the students. This extents to our current review of Key Stage 3 provision, with all members of the team feeding into discussion reviewing the efficacy of current topics. The successful candidate will be able to bring a fresh perspective to this discussion and will be able to help co-create our updated curriculum.

Cambourne Village College, an academy of The Cam Academy Trust, opened in brand new premises in September 2013 with just five forms of Year 7 pupils. Serving one of the fastest-growing communities in the UK, we now have more than 1300 pupils on roll, with major further expansion planned, including the opening of our new sixth form centre in September 2024.

The College has enjoyed remarkable success since opening, gaining an early Ofsted Outstanding rating along with designation as a Leading Edge School. Our pupils achieve excellent results in public examinations via a curriculum designed to offer maximum breadth and opportunity for all abilities. Our extra-curricular offer is also outstanding: annual musical drama performances, termly concerts, a wide range of competitive and recreational sporting activities, and many further clubs and events are on offer. In 2019, we were granted the International School Award by the British Council and are looking forward to re-launching our programme of international visits and exchanges this year.

We strive to be a welcoming and inclusive school for our pupils and also to fulfil our Village College ethos in serving the whole community: we support an active adult education programme and more than 30 local groups and organisations make use of the school’s facilities, out of hours. This unusual commitment to our local community was a key factor in our winning a prestigious Silver Award in the ‘Making a Difference’ category of the Pearson School of the Year celebrations in 2018.
