Our Science Department

We are a dedicated, creative and successful team of twelve teachers covering all three specialisms, with two full time technicians. Our summer 2023 results saw our full cohort combined science entry achieve 60.6% grade 9-4 and 94.4% in all three triple science subjects.
In KS3 students have 3 hours of science a week and in KS4 combined science students have 4 hours a week, while triple science students receive 7 hours. The department occupies seven fully equipped laboratories, two prep rooms and a workroom.  The workroom becomes a place for the team to congregate during breaks, fostering an extremely supportive and friendly atmosphere.  Members of the Science staff are leaders in whole- school, and our culture of sharing ideas and strategies leads to innovative and dynamic teaching across the team.  We also welcome ITT Students each year through the our  University partners.

In Key Stage 3, all students follow the national curriculum covering units of biology, chemistry and physics.  We have an emphasis on practical work and developing independent learners. In Key Stage 4 we follow the Edexcel exam syllabus and enter students for either Combined Science or Triple Science.
The main focus of the Subject Teacher's role is fostering the learning and progress of the pupils in their care. This involves being an effective teacher of pupils as well as of the subject. Quality of preparation, resourcing, planning, subject expertise, teaching skill, pace, challenge, proactive classroom management, effective marking and assessment, high expectations, and positive personal relationships are all central to providing the conditions within which pupils' personal skills, abilities, understanding, learning and progress can be developed.
