We are seeking to appoint a well qualified, enthusiastic and energetic Teacher of Science at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College. The department has a strong track record of results but also promotes enrichment and engagement to try and develop real enjoyment of learning in our students. The ideal candidate will be focused on delivering high quality teaching and learning in Science and have a passion for working with young people. The successful applicant will be expected to teach all aspects of Science at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The ability to teach Chemistry at Key Stage 5 would be desirable but not essential.

The main focus of the Subject Teacher's role is fostering the learning and progress of the pupils in their care. This involves being an effective teacher of pupils as well as of the subject. Quality of preparation, resourcing, planning, subject expertise, teaching skill, pace, challenge, proactive classroom management, effective marking and assessment, high expectations, and positive personal relationships are all central to providing the conditions within which pupils' personal skills, abilities, understanding, learning and progress can be developed.

Information about the Science Faculty

We have moved to a newly refurbished building and site in September 2021. In January 2022 our school was judged to be Good in all areas in our most recent Ofsted inspection. We are an ambitious school and are passionate about the education of our students, continuous professional development of all staff and developing our strong partnership with parents and the wider community.

The students attending NSSFC are fantastic. We are a comprehensive school where students are keen to learn and do well. Our policies and support systems ensure high expectations of behaviour and academic success.

Staff development at all levels is important. A varied CPD programme is provided and tailored to personal needs. You will receive support from your team, your line manager and all colleagues within school.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach a variety of Key Stage 3 and 4 classes.

Members of the faculty form a strong and cohesive team. A marked feature of this is the willingness of staff to share resources and experiences, which provides a very supportive framework for teaching. Electronic schemes of work and lesson plans have been developed by the team and have been widely praised. New members to the team would be expected to contribute fully to the everyday workings of the faculty.

The Team

We have two dedicated science technicians who superbly manage the equipment and the resourcing of the department. We have two specialist science higher level learning support assistants who support lessons and learning across the curriculum. The teaching team includes 12 science teachers, with a balanced blend of biologists, chemists and physicists. The science team is friendly, supportive and works collaboratively to deliver the very best education we can to the students we teach.

Facilities

From September 2021, the school moved to a new site within Northallerton. The site provides state of the art learning facilities including an enhanced digital learning environment, new and fully refurbished teaching spaces, large open plan learning resource centre and a newly built sixth form centre for our rapidly expanding sixth form.

All the classrooms are equipped with a computer, an interactive whiteboard and a data projector. Large computer rooms are available to book.

Key Stages 3 and 4

In KS3 we have written schemes of learning based on the National Curriculum that prepare students for the AQA specification at GCSE. In year 9 we begin to deliver content that is common to both combined science and triple science, to allow students to choose their options during year 9.

At KS4 we also use AQA specifications, offering the Trilogy pathway to the majority of students. Triple Science is offered when students select their GCSE options and has consistently been a popular option in comparison to other option subjects.

Key Stage 5/Post-16

We have a broad offering of courses at Key Stage 5 with AQA Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology and OCR Cambridge Technicals Applied Science. The science courses are popular amongst our sixth form with the majority of students choosing to study one or more science courses.
