What skills and experience we're looking for
An honours degree
A teaching qualification together with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Experience of teaching, learning and assessment to at least KS3/4, preferably KS5
A good understanding of curriculum developments
Able to use a range of teaching and learning strategies
Commitment to high standards in all aspects of the academy’s work
An understanding of how Assessment for Learning can improve student performance and how to embed this within your department
Confidence in the use of standard computer packages and how these can be used to enhance student learning
Able to use student level data to raise standardsü
Enthusiasm for your subject
Creative problem solving together with willingness to take on and develop and try new approaches and ideas
Ability to relate to students in a pleasant and sympathetic manner and to recognise potential safeguarding issues
Able to communicate both orally and in writing to students and their parents
Pleasant and friendly manner

Please note: the post holder will be engaging in regulated activity, working mainly or wholly with children. This position is exempt from the rehabilitation of offender’s act 1974. It is an offence to apply for this role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.

The Science department at Thorp Academy consistently helps Year 11 students to produce outstanding results. Science results have been above national average for consecutive years and we are one of the highest performing Science departments in Northern Education Trust. Triple Science is a popular choice at Thorp and in 2025 over 40% of triple students achieved grade 7+ in all 3 exams, with 5 of the students achieving x3 grade 9's. 17% of our combined science students achieved x2 grade 7's or higher. At A-level in 2025, 38% of our Year 13 students achieved a grade A or A*. On top of supporting pupils to pass exams, the Science department excels in ensuring success for pupils of all abilities across all key stages including Key Stage 5, where we continue to offer all 3 Sciences and BTEC Science.
At Thorp Academy, members of the Science department provide formal, high quality mentoring to ECTs, and are proud of the success they experience. Science pedagogy is at the heart of discussions in staff training and all staff receive weekly high quality CPD from school leaders and subject directors as well as having access to both internal and professional qualifications through the NET Staff College.
