Teacher of Science job summary

At Grace, we are proud of our Science curriculum, which is underpinned by a commitment to developing excellent substantive and disciplinary knowledge across the three disciplines. Each specialist area has identified the key scientific concepts that underpin their subject and how understanding these ideas is key to appreciating the breadth and depth of the sciences. The team is committed to ensuring students receive excellent instruction and understand the importance of science to their own lives through clearly taught substantive and disciplinary knowledge. We want all of our students to become great scientists, inquisitive about the world in which they live and making significant contributions to their communities and beyond.

As a Teacher of Science, you would join a department driven with purpose, cognisant of the need to ensure all students receive high-quality teaching. Alignment with the department vision and commitment to collaboration are both essential to the effectiveness of working together as a team. All members of the department are valued and supported; strength of practice is celebrated as well as opportunities cultivated to furnish the development of the individual.

As a Christian-ethos school of character for the whole community, everyone is welcome whatever their educational background and ability, faith position, social or ethnic background. We are committed to the holistic development of young people: outstanding teaching goes hand in hand with opportunities for character development.

As Head of School, I am looking for teachers who are passionate about their subject, have expert subject knowledge and care deeply about securing the best life chances for the young people in our care. We want our College to be a place where staff come to work excited about the lessons they are going to teach and looking forward to strengthening the relationships they have with colleagues as well as students.

If what you have read above excites you and aligns with your personal values, experience and ambitions, then you are probably the right person for this role and you will love working here.

The Department

The Science department consists of a hard-working and enthusiastic team of 15 staff committed to ensuring that every student in College achieves his or her potential with the support of a technician. The department is characterised by passion for the wider subject and the disciplines within it and maintaining a collaborative atmosphere. We are well equipped with nine laboratories and access to a range of equipment. There are between 210 and 240 students in each year group from 7 to 11.

In Year 7 to 11, students are taught in groups which are grouped by ability to allow for an appropriate pitching of the curriculum so that students are challenged to think hard and make rapid progress. The department assesses students once every half term, with the assessments used to inform setting and the progress each child is making. In Years 7 and 8 students follow a Key Stage 3 programme of study which is closely aligned with the National Curriculum. Year 9 is a transition year in which students cover key scientific concepts that will then be built on at GCSE level in Years 10 and 11.

Students at Grace College have the full range of prior attainment and we are committed to entering all students at GCSE level. Students will be entered for AQA GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Combined Science depending on ability and may study the AQA Entry Level Certificate in addition to this. Students value the subject and respond well to the atmosphere of high expectations. The authoritative teaching of subject specialists is a hallmark of the department and we are ambitious about broadening the ways in which the department can contribute to the co-curricular activities of the College.

Science options in sixth form are very popular. We offer AQA A Level Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology, as well as Applied qualifications in Criminology and Psychology. As a department, we feel passionate about nurturing a continued culture of excellence and interest post-16. We deliver a challenging curriculum which empowers students to build a wide range of practical, analytical and mathematical skills alongside their substantive subject knowledge.

We have a team of expert subject specialists to ensure the delivery of post-16 science education is exceptional and have made links with local universities and alumni to further inspire our students.
