We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and committed Teacher of Science to join our dedicated team at Shelley College on a permanent basis. This is an exciting opportunity for an inspiring classroom practitioner who is passionate about delivering high‑quality science teaching and helping students achieve their full potential.

In this role, you will play an important part in delivering a broad, balanced and engaging Science curriculum that supports students of all abilities. You will work closely with colleagues in the science department, the Senior Leadership Team and wider staff to support the continuous improvement of teaching, learning and student outcomes across the school.

The role involves planning and delivering high‑quality lessons, monitoring and supporting the progress of students, and contributing to a positive and purposeful learning environment. You will also take on the responsibilities of a form tutor, helping to support students’ personal development, wellbeing and academic progress. As with all teaching roles at Shelley College, you will play a part in safeguarding students and maintaining a safe, nurturing and supportive school environment.

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Hold Qualified Teacher Status and a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
  • Have successful experience teaching Science at GCSE, with the ability to teach A‑level an advantage.
  • Demonstrate excellent classroom practice, with the ability to inspire and motivate students of all abilities.
  • Communicate clearly and form positive, professional relationships with students, colleagues and families.
  • Have strong behaviour management skills and foster a purposeful learning environment.
  • Be confident in planning and delivering high‑quality lessons, homework and assessments.
  • Use data effectively to identify gaps, track progress and plan interventions to support student achievement.
  • Be committed to safeguarding, student wellbeing and maintaining a safe learning environment.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and be reflective in their practice.

Overall Purpose of the role

Under the direction of the Curriculum Leader, you will be an outstanding and inspiring teacher to contribute to the development of teaching and learning and the curriculum. As a Teacher of Science, you will be required to meet the general requirements of this post. In addition, you will be required to fulfil any reasonable expectations from the Headteacher.

The post will require you to work in partnership with the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team, governors and staff to ensure the continuous improvement of the Academy.

Safeguarding Requirement:

This post requires the post holder to work in settings with children and young adults. Any employment offer is therefore subject to the results of an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). People who may have contact with younger children (i.e. primary school age) are also required to complete a declaration about family or other members of their household.

Applicants will be required to provide evidence of identity and qualifications and offers of employment will be subject to satisfactory references. For applicants who work or have recently worked in a school, one of the references must be from the Head.

  • To contribute to raising standards of student achievement and attainment.
  • To share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth.
  • To promote and actively support the school’s responsibilities towards safeguarding.
  • To prepare and regularly update subject materials and contribute to the wider development of the Science department.
  • To ensure that ICT, Literacy, Numeracy and subject specialism(s) are reflected in the teaching and learning experience of students.
  • To set regular, relevant and challenging homework tasks.
  • To provide an inclusive learning environment that provides equality of opportunity for students with educational needs.
  • To reward and celebrate students’ success.
  • To maintain high standard of student behaviour in accordance with the school’s procedures and to encourage good practice with regard to punctuality, behaviour standards of work and homework.
  • Where necessary, to liaise with parents and others to support students.
  • To oversee a range of extra-curricular sporting opportunities for students.
  • To provide regular, high-quality feedback to students that supports future learning and progress.
  • To undertake assessment of students as requested by external examination bodies, departmental and school procedures.
  • To use the outcomes of on-going assessment to help shape future planning.
  • To self-evaluate and undertake professional development to help achieve the highest possible standards in role.
  • To undertake any other duties associated with the role, as may be decided by your line manager of the Headteacher.
  • Expertise in role required:

    Essential

    • Qualified Teacher Status
    • Degree or equivalent
    • Successful experience or the ability to teach subject at GCSE
    • Evidence of continuing professional development and a willingness to undertake further development as appropriate.
    • Evidence of/potential to become an excellent classroom practitioner, capable of inspiring students and forming good relationships with colleagues
    • Ability to inspire and motivate students
    • Able to analyse data with a view to developing strategies to improve performance
    • Ability to monitor and evaluate impact of interventions and strategies
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Excellent behaviour management skills.
    • Commitment to the safeguarding of young people.

      Other (physical, mobility, local conditions)

      • Is willing to work flexibly within scope of overall hours, e.g. evening meetings.

      Desirable

      • Successful experience or the ability to teach subject at A Level
      • Detailed knowledge of current developments in subject area for all levels including sixth form
      • Knowledge of innovating teaching and learning strategies
      • Highly competent in ICT and the use of computers
      • A willingness to be fully involved in the wider life of Shelley College, including extra-curricular activities.
