Teacher of Spanish (0.6 Maternity Cover) job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher of Spanishto join our outstanding department on a temporary, part-time (0.6) basis to cover maternity leave.

Spanish holds a prominent place in our curriculum and embodies our school’s mission of providing the Best Atmosphere, Best Support and Best Results for every student. We want our students not only to achieve excellent outcomes but also to develop a lifelong love of languages and a genuine curiosity about other cultures. Through the study of Spanish, students learn to be ambitious, determined and inquisitive, qualities that reflect the values at the heart of Bourne Grammar School.

The Spanish Department is well established and highly successful. Rated Outstanding by Ofsted in our most recent inspection (October 2022), the team of eight teachers and one Language Assistant - including four native speakers - work collaboratively to deliver an academically ambitious and culturally enriching curriculum. Lessons are dynamic, creative and conducted largely in the target language. Grammar is introduced early and built upon systematically, enabling students to communicate with accuracy and confidence.

Spanish is taught across all Key Stages and is compulsory for students is Years 7-11. In Year 7, students receive six hours per fortnight, followed by five hours from Years 8-11, with many continuing into our popular A-Level course (nine hours per fortnight plus weekly sessions with our Language Assistant). Beyond the classroom, students enjoy a vibrant co-curricular programme, including study trips to Spain both for our lower school and our A-Level cohort who visit Seville.

Results are exceptional: in the most recent examinations, over 50%of GCSE students achieved grades 7-9, and over 90% of A-Level students achieved A*-B. This success reflects both the high expectations we set and the outstanding support we provide to students and colleagues alike.

We are an oversubscribed mixed selective school serving Bourne, Stamford and Peterborough. Our students are well-behaved and motivated and are taught in modern and well-resourced facilities. The school offers 240 places to students in Year 7 and, with a growing Sixth Form of over 500, has expanded to become one of the largest grammar schools in the country. The vast majority of Year 11 students transfer into our Sixth Form where students are offered a choice of 26 A-Level subjects.

The best atmosphere, the best support, the best results

This is our purpose statement - we have no long or complicated mission statement. The order of the purpose statement is deliberate; we believe that if we get the atmosphere and support right then, given our able students and committed staff, good results will follow. The atmosphere is special and cherished by us all and something that interview candidates often remark upon. We are a large and busy school and our students are well-behaved, motivated and want to be here and their parents/carers want them to be here. Most of the students, most of the time, want to learn and enjoy lessons which are well-taught and engaging.

The teaching staff body numbers around 100 teachers supported by 40 non-teaching colleagues. All teaching staff are subject specialists and are only required to teach their own subject. Staff absence is very low, as is staff turnover. Staff who do leave often do so for promoted posts. All teaching staff at Bourne Grammar School are issued with a laptop and other benefits including no breaktime, lunchtime or bus supervision duties and free on-site parking. Tea and coffee are freely available in our two large staffrooms.
