What skills and experience we're looking for

This is a Permanent Full-time role. Pay scale dependent on experience with potential for TLR / responsibility allowance if combined with a leadership role. Anticipated start date of September 2023, with some flexibility if required.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and passionate Teacher of Theology and Philosophy with excellent subject knowledge and the drive to challenge our committed and capable students.

The Theology and Philosophy department at Reading school consists of three subject specialists and is unique in its delivery of the AS level Religious Studies course to all students at KS4 (Y9-11) resulting in students obtaining the qualification by the end of year 11. The Department also offers Philosophy A level which is a popular subject in the sixth form with numerous students applying for Theology and Philosophy related degrees at top universities in the UK and the USA.

The Theology and Philosophy department prepares boys to be theologically and philosophically literate, and to be engaged young people who have the intellectual framework to reflect analytically, critically and hermeneutically – such that they can develop and confidently articulate an informed view on the important questions, whilst remaining open-minded and humble. This is underpinned by a ‘critical realist pedagogical approach’, to the subject and the knowledge that the Theology and Philosophy is intellectually challenging and enjoyable academic discipline. Our Theology & Philosophy department serves a diverse, inclusive and thoroughly modern community at Reading School and we believe that outstanding teaching of Religious Studies, Theology & Philosophy is essential to the formation and character of our students.

We are looking for a candidate who can inspire awe and wonder, engage students in life’s biggest questions and who possesses sufficient academic depth to enjoy teaching Religious Studies or Philosophy up to A-Level.
