What skills and experience we're looking for

Secondary School Teacher – SEN Curriculum Support (Core Subjects)

We are looking to recruit a teacher who can specialise in teaching incoming Year 7 pupils, accelerating progress in English and Maths, bridging gaps in learning between KS2 and KS3. Pupils who join the school with KS2 data below the national average receive a personalised programme of study in Maths and English. We have developed this strategy over the years and it is currently delivered by an experienced member of staff. Moving forward, we are looking to expand capacity in this area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver high-quality lessons in core subjects to small groups of SEN pupils, using differentiated strategies to meet individual learning needs.
  • Work collaboratively with the SENCO and subject departments to adapt curriculum content and assessment approaches.
  • Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and monitor progress against specific SEN targets.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel valued, supported, and motivated to succeed.
  • Use a variety of assessment tools to track pupil progress, providing regular feedback to pupils, parents/carers, and staff.
  • Support students in developing their confidence, independence, and self-esteem in both academic and social contexts.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of student progress and contribute to review meetings and reports.
  • Ensure effective classroom management that promotes positive behaviour and engagement.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to the wider school community.

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Proven experience teaching secondary-aged pupils, ideally within a SEN or inclusive education setting.
  • Strong knowledge of the secondary curriculum in English, Maths, and/or Science.
  • Understanding of a range of SEN needs (e.g. autism, ADHD, dyslexia) and effective teaching strategies to support them.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to plan engaging, differentiated lessons and assess pupil progress effectively.
  • A genuine passion for supporting the learning and development of SEN pupils.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Additional qualifications or training in SEN (e.g. NASENCO, Makaton, TEACCH).
  • Experience working in a specialist provision or resource base within a mainstream setting.
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies and inclusive classroom resources.
