Teaching Assistant job summary

We have a vacancy for a Scale 3 Teaching Assistant to join our team at Windmill Primary School. If you think you have the right skills for this role then please apply. KEY RELATIONSHIPS:   

Work under the instruction/guidance of teaching/senior staff and within an agreed system of supervision, to support pupils and teachers, implementing agreed work programmes with individuals/groups, in or out of the classroom.  Teaching assistants will need to respond to questions and generally assist pupils to undertake set activities. 

MAIN PURPOSE:

Support for pupils

Use specialist skills, training and experience to support teaching and learning Assist with programmes of intervention for pupils with gaps in their learning or with Special Education Needs and Disabilities. Establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom Encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage all pupils in activities Promote independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance Provide verbal feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement and written feedback when working with small groups Support pupils in use of technology Maintain a log of any planned interventions, including information about progress made by pupils

Support for the teachers

Work with the teacher to establish and maintain a positive, tidy and pleasant learning environment Monitor and evaluate pupils’ responses to learning activities through observation and planned recording of achievement and against predetermined learning objectives Provide verbal feedback and reports as required to the teacher on pupil achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence Assist with the keeping and updating of records as agreed with the teacher, contributing to reviews of systems/records as requested Assist the teacher with assessment activities, collecting information, preassessing/sorting pupil work to bring specific issues to the teacher’s attention Tick and initial work in books; praising pupils’ work where appropriate and informing the teacher of any significant issues Promote positive values, attitudes and good behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour Liaise sensitively and effectively with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher within your role/responsibility and participate in feedback sessions/meetings with parents with, or as directed Administer and assess routine tests and invigilate exams/tests Provide clerical/administrative support, produce worksheets for agreed activities, photocopying, displays and gathering of resources Support pupils in use of technology

Support for the school

Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding/child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns about child safety and well-being to an appropriate person Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop Contribute to the overall ethos/works/aims of the school Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with the teacher, to support achievement and progress of pupils Attend and participate in scheduled meetings Participate in training and other learning activities as required Be on duty at morning playtimes twice a week When on playground duty at morning playtime or lunchtime, promote pupils’ enjoyment of those times by leading and encouraging play activities Supervise pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required Monitor and order items of stock as required Assist with First Aid and Health & Safety events, including personal care in some cases Assist with cleaning small areas in some cases

Lunchtime/Playtime Supervision

To be responsible, under the direction of the Lunchtime Coordinators, individually or as a member of a team, for securing the safety, welfare and good conduct of pupils during the school’s lunchtime, in accordance with the practices and procedures of the Local Authority and school. To work in accordance with the school behaviour policy Lunchtime duty will be for 25-30 minutes per day. Each member of staff is entitled to a break of at least 25 minutes between the hours of 11:30am and 1:30pm. Duties will include: o Promoting pupils’ enjoyment of lunchtime by positively encouraging polite eating of the food provided in the school hall and leading and encouraging play activities outside or in the classrooms (wet play) o Supervision of the pupils in the dining hall, playground areas and school premises and may include ancillary associated duties (e.g. cleaning up as necessary any spillage, accidents, sickness; ensuring tables are clean; helping children to become independent; etc) o Ensuring the maintenance of good order and discipline
