This role is for someone who enjoys supporting early years learning, helping children make strong starts in language, reading and number skills while promoting their welfare and independence. You will work alongside EYFS teachers to deliver learning activities, support small groups and individual children, and help create a calm, engaging environment where children feel safe and confident to learn.
What you'll be doing
- Support class teaching by working with individuals and small groups on phonics, early maths, communication and social skills as directed by the class teacher.
- Supervise whole classes for short periods when required, maintaining routines and promoting positive behaviour.
- Prepare and maintain classroom resources, displays and learning areas to support focused, purposeful lessons.
- Observe and record pupils' progress; provide clear verbal and written feedback to teachers to inform planning and report on interventions.
- Follow care plans and, after appropriate training, assist with physical, medical or speech/language needs as specified.
- Help pupils develop study, organisational and recording skills appropriate to EYFS expectations.
- Supervise pupils on trips, playground duties and out-of-class activities, ensuring safety and inclusion.
- Contribute information for Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews and carry out tasks from agreed plans.
- Work with external professionals (for example, speech therapists) and support recommended strategies in the classroom.
- Maintain confidentiality of pupil records, and follow school policies on safeguarding, health & safety and behaviour management.
What we're looking for
Essential:
- GCSE level 4 (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
- Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
- Experience working with children and young people, ideally in primary or early years settings.
- Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with children and colleagues.
- Good communication skills, accurate record-keeping and competent keyboard skills.
- Ability to adapt resources and approaches "in the moment" so all children can access learning.
- Reliable, punctual, discreet and able to work both as part of a team and on your own initiative.
Desirable:
- Experience delivering targeted interventions (for example, phonics or nurture groups).
- Recent professional development relevant to SEND, Autism awareness, ELSA or similar.
About the team
You will join the EYFS team within Compass Eko Trust. The team works closely with class teachers, therapists and support staff to deliver consistent routines and targeted support for early years pupils.
