Teaching Assistant job summary
Permanent Full-Time Teaching Assistant (Paid at Grade 4)
Fir Tree is a vibrant, successful two form entry Junior School in the town of Wallingford, south Oxfordshire. 235 pupils are on roll (Year 3 - Year 6). The Thameside town of Wallingford has excellent transport links with Oxford, Reading and the surrounding south Oxfordshire towns and villages.
An exciting project is currently underway, which will culminate in Fir Tree converting from a Junior - Primary setting from September 2026.
A rare opportunity to join our team as a Teaching Assistant has arisen. This full-time role will commence in September 2026. The successful candidate will be deployed in Lower Key Stage 2, and, working alongside highly skilled professionals, will wake up each morning with the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of children, while at the same time working in a school which values the professional development of all its staff. This role will be varied, in that it will involve some 1:1 work with specific children as well as there being aspects of facilitating learning for groups of enthusiastic pupils.
We will shortly be welcoming Reception and Key Stage 1 children into our school community. With this in mind, we are keen to hear from candidates who, alongside working within this role, may be able work within our breakfast and or after school club provision.
Visitors to our school routinely comment on the calm and purposeful environment we have created, underpinned by the values of respect, kindness, resilience, fairness, curiosity and aspiration. Expectations of behaviour are high. Clear and consistently applied policies are in place to ensure that no learning time is wasted. Teaching and learning at Fir Tree is characterised by warm relationships, high expectations and a clear and coherent way of following approaches that make a difference in the classroom.
As part of the Oxford Diocesan School Trust, we are firmly committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
Due to these posts having access to children and/or vulnerable adults, candidates will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service check. The possession of a criminal record, including family members, may prevent an applicant from obtaining this post, as all cases are judged individually according to the nature of the role and information provided.
Job description, person specification and applications are via My New Term on our school website: https://www.fir-tree-juniors.org/vacancies/
Visits to the school are encouraged and these can be arranged by contacting us by phone or email (01491 836341/office.2578@fir-tree.oxon.sch.uk)
Closing date for applications: midday on Wednesday 24th June
Interviews will be held during the week commencing Monday 29th June

Fir Tree is a two-form entry junior school with close links to our feeder infant school St Nicholas C of E, and currently we have 218 children on roll. We take pride in our ethos, which is underpinned by the values of: respect, responsibility, courage, tolerance, friendship and perseverance.
We are fortunate to have a fantastic school site, with a forest school and pond, a vegetable garden (supplying our chef, Siva, with home-grown produce to be cooked for lunches in our school kitchen), a large playing field, play equipment and an outdoor classroom which we call ‘The Castle’.
This is an exciting time for Fir Tree Junior School. Whilst currently a two form entry junior school, due to housing growth in the town we expect to become a one-form primary school and whilst we can’t put an exact date on this yet, we anticipate the change is likely to happen within the tenure of our next Headteacher. As such, the appointed candidate will need to be able to demonstrate strong planning skills and an ability to work collaboratively - with our colleagues at St Nicholas C of E Infants’ School, with colleagues within ODST and with those at Oxfordshire County Council. Although planning is still at a relatively early stage, the eventual project will provide a rare opportunity to support the transition of a junior school into the full primary phase.
