Teaching Assistant Level 2 job summary

The Academy is looking for an outstanding Level 2 Teaching Assistant with experience of SEND, who is aspirational, enthusiastic, creative, caring and committed to supporting the delivery of education within our academy. The successful candidate will support teaching staff in the development and education of pupils, including the provision of specialist skills as appropriate.

The post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) and therefore the ability to speak fluent and spoken English is an essential requirement for this role.

Job Description

This level is applicable to experienced teaching assistants whose working role calls for competence across a varied range of responsibilities

Mary Elliot Academy is a school for students aged 11-18 years with severe and profound learning difficulties. We are part of Thrive Education Partnership, a specialist multi-academy trust committed to providing the very best outcomes for students with a range of special educational needs.

Purpose of the Role

To support teaching staff in the development and education of pupils including the provision of specialist skills as appropriate.

Duties and responsibilities

Support for pupils (either individually or in groups)

  • Support the activities of individuals or groups
  • Establish and maintain relationships with individual pupils and groups
  • Support pupils during learning activities including supporting in the hydrotherapy pool.
  • Promote pupils’ social and emotional development
  • Contribute to the health and wellbeing of pupils
  • Provide support for bilingual/multilingual pupils (where appropriate to the focus of the role)
  • Support children with specific needs, for example, sensory and/or physical impairment, cognitive or learning difficulties, behavioural, emotional and social development needs, communication and interaction difficulties and individual personal requirements.
  • Support pupils to access the curriculum.

Support for the teacher(s)

  • Observe and report on pupil performance
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining the learning environment
  • Contribute to the management of pupils’ behaviour
  • Assist in the maintenance of pupils’ records
  • Support the maintenance of pupils’ safety and security
  • Provide general administrative support, for example, administer coursework, produce worksheets etc.

Support for the school

  • Support the development and effectiveness of team work within the school environment
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with other professionals
  • Liaise with parents as appropriate
  • Review and develop own professional practice
  • Any other duties deemed appropriate at the direction of the Head Teacher

Qualification and other requirements

  • NVQ level 2 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or equivalent qualifications or proven experience of working with children or individuals with special needs
  • Good numeracy/literacy skills
  • You will need to have an ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence through the medium of English.

Within the grade and job description of each level the exact focus of the role will be decided at school level and will take into account the needs of the school as well as the experience and development needs of the member of staff
