Teaching Assistant job summary

At St Michael’s Church School, we are unapologetically ambitious for every pupil. We believe that background should never determine future, and that great education has the power to open doors, widen horizons and change lives.

We are now seeking a committed and thoughtful Teaching Assistant to join our team. This is not a passive role. It is an opportunity to make a tangible difference to pupils’ learning, confidence and life chances every single day.

Our school is rooted in a deeply inclusive ethos. We do not lower expectations when pupils face challenges, we respond with care, precision and determination. As a Teaching Assistant at St Michael’s, you will play a vital role in helping pupils overcome barriers and succeed both academically and personally.

Our FLAME values, Friendship, Learning, Action, Manners and Excellence, are evident in the way we work together as a staff team and in the expectations we hold for our pupils. We are a forward thinking, community focused school where collaboration, professional growth and shared purpose matter.

We are looking for someone who:

  • believes every pupil can succeed, without exception
  • has a calm, patient and consistent approach to supporting behaviour and learning
  • is able to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils and colleagues
  • can adapt support to meet a range of needs, including pupils with SEND and those facing additional challenges
  • is proactive, reflective and willing to learn
  • is keen to contribute to the wider life of the school

In this role, you will:

  • support pupils in lessons to access learning and develop independence
  • work closely with teachers to deliver targeted support and interventions
  • help create a positive, purposeful classroom environment
  • contribute to the assessment of pupils’ progress through careful observation and feedback
  • play an active role in promoting our inclusive ethos and high expectations

We are also committed to developing future teachers.
For the right candidate, this role offers a strong foundation for a career in teaching. You will gain:

  • structured opportunities to observe high quality teaching
  • experience of planning, scaffolding and adapting learning
  • professional development aligned with classroom practice and pedagogy
  • support and guidance for those considering teacher training routes

We take professional growth seriously and will work with you to build the knowledge, confidence and experience needed to take the next step when the time is right.

In return, we offer:

  • a supportive and collaborative staff team
  • a strong commitment to professional development
  • the opportunity to work in a school where values are lived, not simply stated
  • the chance to make a genuine difference to pupils’ lives

If you are someone who cares deeply about doing the job well, who notices the small things that matter, and who is ready to play an active part in a school community, we would love to hear from you.
